Cylinder Head/Valve Job

Sorry this is my second post asking about stuff again but I was just wondering if anyone would know how much a valve job/replacing the cylinder head would cost

Assuming that you are not going to do the work yourself about $1500.

My estimate:
About $600-900 for the pulling the head and reinstalling.
$50 for gaskets/seals.
$150-$200 for the head work
If replacing the head, I think a new top line casting is around $450.

Who is this engine builder that everyone speaks so highly of? More importantly where is he, (shipping charges High for heads and I don't trust the shipping companies). I don't mean to hijack the thread but I would appreciate the contact info.

A large part of the expense is pulling the head. With a new shortblock or longblock, you've still got to pay to pull the motor and reinstall.. I'll bet that costs even more.

engnbldr is Ted. His website is engnbldr.com.

Back in college, I'd pull the head and replace it for around $300 in labor.

The work I got done was a 100% rebuild, oversized vavles both intake and exhaust, a PNP job done as well has having them reshim my new cams.

Cost around 600 for both heads.

I then got his Grade 10.9 headbolts and master rebuild set (which has all gaskets needed) and the heads shipped back for another 175 or so.

The cams are Weasys2k's cams from this site for about 400 or so. After shipping works to about 450.

Doing all of that is about 1200 or so on my end doing all work on my own and it should boost the HP up a good 30-35hp and the tq an equal amount if not more. But if you only want to swap a HG, then you can do it for about 175 if everything is in good condition. Again doing it yourself.

hm i only saw quotes for a 22re head rebuild though. I need my cylinder head completly replaced the problem is the guy who owned my truck before me got a valve job done except they messed something up with the shims in valves so its too small and my engine even when idling makes a clicking sound

uh oh sounds like a DOA hack job was done to your heads!!

HOnestly it sounds like you just need new valves....the shims are only in there to keep the distance from the cam lobe circles to the shim itself constant... A valve that's too short will need a thicker shim btwn the bucket and the cam. A valve thats longer will need a thinner shim.

DOA used to install the oversized valves and from what I understand ended up using the BIGGEST shims that toyota made. So further adjustment with wear was impossible... DOA = ultra uber bad imo....just do a search and youll see.

On to GOOD AND AWSOME COMPANIES!!

Ted will work on 3vze heads, I know as I just got mine back from him and I couldn't be happier!!!

Honestly I would have someone who is very familiar with toy heads have a looksie at em before condemning them to the scrap heap...

I know this is an old post, but it's still useful for those searching message boards for answers.

On my 22re that I just rebuilt the head of, I had new seals ($6 each) installed and had them seated at carquest for about $60. We did the removal and installation ourselves. We also had a few other parts hot tanked and cleaned up, so the total cost of everything was $200. This also included a pressure check to make sure there were no cracks in the head. Better to be safe than put all that work into the engine only to find the crack and be sorry I wasted all that time on it. :-)
