Looking at a 92 ext cab with mods - insight?
Hey all,
I am selling my beloved Tundra to pay off the loan and buy something for cash. I just dont need the monthly payment anymore. My neighbor is selling his 92 pickup and I asked him to save it for me until I sell my Tundra, which he agreed to do. Here are the specs:

- 22RE w/5 spd & 4x4
- 135K, 15K on remanned head
- Clutch has never been replace, he is unsure on timing chain & guide
- 4.56 gears, lockright in front, open rear
- 35" AT's on 8" rims
- 3.5" Hockey puck body lift
- "torsion bars cranked up" (his words)
- Warn manual hubs
- 8000lb Ramsey winch in custom made front bumper w/receiver
- $2700 bucks
Is there anything I should check into? Is the hockey puck body lift kinda ghetto? Should I do the timing chain and guide replacement right away since they are interference motors? This seems like a very very good deal to me, am I correct in that thinking?

from what i see other trucks from this generation going for, 2700 is a pretty good deal. I am willing to give him the full asking price in exchange for saving the truck for me. I was concerned about that "hockey puck" lift, is it really a scary thing or is it a good way to do a BL cheaply?

no.. cheap home made BLs are bad news. i would defently take it out or at least replace it with a 2 or 3" body lift from 4crawler. are you sure its locked in the front wiht open rear? that backwards of how most people do it. usually they lock the rear or, lock front and rear. over all it looks like a clean truck. i'd say go for it, take out the home made body lift, sell the 35s get some 33s and call it a day. (the following day, after hanging out here, you'll want to do a SAS and full exo cage
)

yeah, locked in front, but not rear. He used to have a welded rear, but replaced it because he didnt like how it drove on the street. I'll do a search, but isnt there a factory electric locker for these years or am I thinking of something else?
I know whatcha mean about hanging out here, and having a list of mods in mind. I have already been researching SAS. I was out at the local wheelin' area a couple weeks ago and there was a 94 etra cab with SAS locked all around. Man that thing kicked ass all over the trails.

i'd prolly leave everything as is until spring. Then I would swap out the hockey pucks for some urethane, sell he 35's and get some 33's. If finances allow, I would see about a rear locker, cam and header, then save for SAS.

ok, now I am torn. I have some more information about the truck above as well as another prospect truck. I'd love to hear some thoughts from you guys...
I have found out a few more things about the truck above by closer inspection and talking with the owner. First is that the cab corners are very crusty on the back, where it is hidden from view unless you look from under the box. I also found out the hubs are asin, not warn (thats a good thing isnt it?) There is a mystery leak, and the owner is almost positive the windshield is not sealed properly. When it rains there is a wet spot on the carpet by the firewall, like water is leaking down from somewhere behind the dash. He said he has went over the entire firewall from the engine bay side and sealed everything, but it still leaks. If I got this truck I would be replacing the body lift, selling the 35's for 33's, and getting a locker for the rear, with plans for SAS someday down the road as this truck will have to be a driver from after my Tundra sells until July when I buy a superduty.
I also might buy an 88 standard cab short box with the V6 (i know, i know). This one has some front damage, but I could get it and repair it for about 1000 bucks total if I am lucky. Thats a 1700 difference between the above truck. This might make a better platform for a project down the road since its a shortbox/standard cab. Plus, dont the V6 equipped trucks have bigger/better brakes? If the long term goals would be to bob the bed, sas, etc perhaps this is a better overall choice. The other truck only has a front locker and 4.56 gears going for it once you figure in the items I would be replacing. Since I plan to go SAS, the front locker isnt really a big selling point. The 4.56's are nice, but I am sure I would end up going larger when I do the SAS.
I am kinda leaning toward the standard cab at this point, but I am really not sure. Thoughts?

If your serious about the future SAS and bob... then the 88 makes more sense to me. Like you said, the 4.56 gearing, front locker, 3.5" BL all will go anyway.... so not worth much to you. Plus I think the shorter wheelbase of the 88 would make for a better trail rig, if that truly is your goal.
Both 5spd?
You might want to look into the costs of working on a 4cyl versus the 3.0. Not saying one is better or cheaper than the other (since we don't have a full understanding of the condition of either from this post). However, you will find the V6 doesn't have much support for crawl boxes, transfer gears, transfer E-brakes and more.
Seems like some of the mods I have listed might be in your future from the rig you want to build.

yes, they are both 5spd's. I guess I will research the 4 vs 6 a bit more. I am still pretty torn. The extra can would be super nice to have so I can use it for camping and whatnot. It would be hard to fit the wife, kid and dog into a standard cab. Its very temping to buy the extra cab and then once I get a DD I could try and find another shortbox frame to put the extra cab on with a bob'ed bed. I dunno what to do. I cant do anything until my Tundra sells so I just keep going back and forth.
