Editing music files - what software?

I'm working on a DVD slideshow using Adobe Encore DVD and am putting music to it. I've found that I need to shorten some of the music files to match what I'm after for run time. I have zero experience editing music files or doing any sort of mixing, so excuse me if I'm using the wrong terminology...

Is there any decent freeware that handles this, or is there an industry leading package worth the ching?

I beleive Nero 6 can do it, as I have in the past.
You can open up a tune in Nero and drag and drop it to a 2nd template after you shortned it in the first one.

It has been a few years since I did that though, but it was not to hard.

I have Nero Express and it doesn't appear to have that feature (is Nero 6 worth buying? I'd only need it for editing audio tracks)

Oh yeah, someone turned me onto that app when I did the 4 year YT anniversary project.

Works great if it is the same one I am thinking of, and you can stitch together files too.
