I currently own a 1986 4runner. It is the 4cyl EFI/5-spd. My tranny is needing rebuilt. I have found a 1989 4runner with the 4cyl ?/ 5-spd combo that I can pick up cheap due to a smoked motor. The 89 is in better shape than my 86. My question is can I swap my motor from the 86 into the 89 without any problems? If it is a direct swap I would be up for the challenge. Is there anything I need to look for to make sure this would work? Any help would be appreciated. The sooner the better due to wanting to buy this ASAP....Thanks, Ashby.

I am not sure of the 4cyl motors actual model (22r, 22re, ect..).
I know my 86 is a 4cyl EFI...

 

I'm sure the 88 is fuel injected also, so the swap should be as simple as it can get. Just label everything you can so you'll know where it goes, then part out the 86 and make some dough.

 

You may have problems passing the visual smog inspection if your state has that. You can't always put an older engine into a newer body.

 

No smog checks in Central IL.

4SKIN, where in IL are you? I grew up there (Champaign).

Parents still live (and work) there.

Edit - BTW, the hardest part is going to be unbolting the engine from the tranny while it's still in the truck.
One thing that helps, unbolt and remove the motor mounts and lower the engine back down to rest on the frame.
That will free up a little more space to get at the bolts.

 

Two differences that I can think of are the EFI check connector changed in '87 for the better and so did the intake plenum.

Lots of guys like to swap to the later 22re intake plenum (89 +) for a smoother idle and smoother throttle response. You might want to consider putting the '89 plenum on your '86.

Other than that, I can't foresee any problems!

I had a buddy who tried to put late 80s early 90s 22re parts on his 85 22re and he had some problems with the injectors. I don't remember if it was just the plug shape or the resistance changed but they were incompatible. You might try calling LC Eng. or DOA since they do some work with the 22r/e

 

^^^ You're right, there are differences in the injectors.
If you use the intake plentum (sp) (and wiring, etc.) from the 89 and bolt it to your longblock you should be fine.

 

Ya I would probably swap the intakes if I buy the 89. Do you think $650 is a good price for the 89? The body is straight and it is from North Carolina( owner stated they don't salt the roads there). A small dime size of surface rustover the pass side rear 1/4 is all I could see.

 

I'd buy it for $650!!!
