1990 4Runner Head Gasket Recall Honored
I just wanted to post and let everyone know this. I just purchased a 90
4Runner with 152,000 and called the dealer. They said there was no problem just bring it in and they would take care of it. Hard to believe they are going to honor a recall on a 16 yr old vehicle, but cool. Now my dilemma, I have always avoided dealerships because I believe they over charge/make up problems. Of course as soon as i drove it up to schedule an appointment I got the "Well while we are in there if it looks like some other stuff needs to be fixed, like water pump, etc.. we will call you because it will be cheaper then". And they said I was allowed a rental for only two days but it might take longer and I was responsible for any days above that. So already I'm thinking this is going to be expensive recall. Should I just wait to see if it blows? Then have them fix it.

There are rumors that the special service campaign has ended or is being phased out. I'd get it done ASAP, before they realize it has ended. Like you said, it's a 16 year old vehicle, the campaign isn't going to last forever.
Unless you do the work yourself, I'd be happy to have the typical things worked on while they're in there. That includes the waterpump, timing belt, and pulleys. You pay a little more now, but eventually they WILL ALL go out and you'll be paying more in labor then.

I would go ahead and have the timing belt, drive belts and water pump replaced. You will only be paying for the parts and not the labor. Would be well worth it considering you probably don't know the trucks history.

Thanks for all the replys. Actually it was a one owner ex-military guy. Timing belt along with others were replaced @ 130,000. It is in realy good shape and runs very good. I live in Jersey and work in NY City(train-subway), so I will only drive it mostly on the weekends. The only reason I would lean toward getting it done now is peace of mind that it and everything they check/replace is done.

Since it was done at 130k, then just tell them to change the headgasket and nothing else. If they call for anything else tell them no. You may want to check on the Steering Relay Rod recall too while it is there. Check the sticky at the top of the thread page.

Water pump, timing belt for sure...

I would get it done. Often, when people ask about buying one of those trucks, yotatech participants suggest that prospective buyers find out if it had the recall done. It may increase the value to tell people taht it was done, and last longer for you.

Well I dropped the 4runner off on Tues and they said it would take at least two days. I was completly expecting a call saying they found all this stuff that needed to be replaced. Today I got a call from the service supevisor and he said everything looked really good (water pump, belts etc..) and that he was going to replace the knock(sp) sensor(covered under recall). He said he could only recommend replacing the Dist cap, plugs, wires, hoses, etc for $425, of course I said pass. This has to be the first time I have ever had a Good experience with a Dealer. Very impressed

YOU NEED TO BUY NEW HEADBOLTS OR YOU WILL HAVE FUTURE HG ISSUES!!!!
i cannot stress the above enough.
You also will need a new knock sensor wire they are like 8 bux and prevent a code 52 that will probably show up if you dont get a new one.
Just trying to look out for ya...

The knock sensor and wire were covered under the Head gasket recall. Why would not replacing the Head bolts cause problems? I thought the problem was with the gasket not the bolts.

I talked with the Service Manager at the dealership. He said yes they are T-T-Y bolts( torque to yeild) , but they have reused them thousands of times without any problems. I was going to have them go ahead and use new ones but the heads are already installed. He assured me they do this all the time and if the tech saw there might be a problem with them he would have let me know. Cross my fingers.

What years does this recall cover? I called a dealer today and they said it stopped on MY92, therefore mine isn't covered. Is this correct?
He also said that the only actice campaign covering my rig is for a steering relay. I'm taking it in Monday, but I want to make sure what he told me was correct...is he?

SPECIAL SERVICE CAMPAIGN (V06) FOR 1990 – EARLY 1995 TRUCK, 4RUNNER & T100 WITH 3VZ–E V6 ENGINES
Under the Special Service Campaign Program, the head gaskets will be replaced on all the affected vehicles regardless of leakage or not, and there will not be any age, mileage or time restrictions under the Special Service Campaign.
If it was already done there will be a SSC completion label affixed to the left front door hinge post near the check strap.
This is from the SPA V06 that was sent to all people.
This Special Policy Adjustment
extended the warranty coverage for the head gaskets to 8 years or 100,000 miles
The SPA (Special Policy Adjust) is no longer honered
The SSC V06 is still active.
As a result, for a specific group of the vehicles previously
involved in the Special Policy Adjustment, Toyota is now changing the handling
procedure to a Special Service Campaign.
