wondering if anyone knows whether the headlight assembly from a 99-02 4runner will fit a 96-98? I'm not satified with the lighting that i get, my bother own's a 2000 4runner, and he's willing to trade with my 97 with some added goodies. he gets quite a bit better lighting than i do. is this swap possible??

ya it will work pretty sure you will need the coners to go with the 2000 headlights i wish i had the money to update mine

 

Yep, I sell them both and have sold a quote a few for 96-98 4Runners. You don't have to update the corners, but it looks much better.

You do not NEED the clear corners; that's a cosmetic choice many people like to do. The existing corners work just fine.

 

Part of my question too, just didn't see this when I did a search and then posted, but I have a question for you Jason, I noted a different valance with driving lights that you show in the 'after' picture. What sort of after market set up is that? I'm doing a similar set up but using the stock valance with driving lights from a '99 Pontiac Grand Am mounted on either side of the license plate. Just got my harness in so going to try to hook them up. I really like the look and my truck is the same color as the one you show the before and after shots. Is the valance, driving lights available? What do they sell for? Looks like I have another add item to my 'yard' list.

 

i'll be honest with ya'll, i was wanting to swap in some 99-02 headlights on my 98, but after i bought some silverstars and spent one night adjusting my stock ones, they are producing a better beam pattern than my friend's 01 with silverstars in both the low and high beams...

 

What did you adjust them with? (i.e. what did you reference when adjusting?)

 

first off, i was unsure about the "proper" headlight adjusting method, as i own no owner's manuals or FSMs. so i waited until about 8:00 one night and parked my truck about 40 feet from our garage door, making sure it was perpendicular to it. then i just let the truck run, popped the hood, and got a small wrench to adjust the plastic nuts (b/c the hex-key type adjusters are harder to deal with IMO) to raise, lower, adjust left or right, etc. once i was happy with the garage door method (i.e. i had the beam pattern as level across the top of the beam as possible), i went out into our front yard, which is about an acre. i then looked at the low and highbeams as it would be with me driving, and adjusted even more until i had a good cut-off point with the low beams, and until i had my high beams putting light out considerably farther than before, all while making sure it would not be "blinding" oncoming drivers...hope this helps...

 

The existing corners are ugly as hell though.

 

you guys talking about your lights that suck? what about us with 80s and early 90s trucks? our lighting is much worse! lol. i wonder, and sorry to hijack thread, but will the newer 4runner/taco lights work on a 88 truck?

 

I agree that the older headlamps have a more defined beam cut-off, but when I swapped my 1997 headlamps for 2002 ones, I noticed the quality of the usable light on the ground had improved dramatically. The new headlamps project a wider low and high beam that is probably ~20% brighter (my opinion) than the old headlamps produced. The high beam was much better with the new headlamps as well. When I swapped headlamps I kept the same bulb (Philips +80% from Powerbulbs).

 

Here is another tip on AIMING the new lights. Before you take your old lights out, park in front of a garage door, maybe 10 feet back, or a wall. Turn your lights on, and put tape up where the beam hits. Remove the old lights and install the new ones. Then make sure it lines up with the tape. If it doens't, just turn the screws to adjust.
