ok, ilast time i went the cheap way, i vowed to never do it again, but i here i am.

just lifted my 4runner, and bought Mud King XT 285/75/16 tires. two reasons i did this:

-manufactured by BFG

-talked to someone who had them and he said that he loved them

so here's my question: the tire shop filled these to 36 psi. when i left the shop, the sidewalls seemed VERY soft. i make a turn that would normally feel like nothing in my stockers, now the back end swings back and forth when i come out of the turns. filled them up to 44 psi, and they still feel VERY unstable.

these are on my stock 16x7 rims. is this normal, since these are kind of a narrow tire for its height on a narrow rim, would i have the same results with higher end tires like the BFG KM's or GY MTR's? or would those give me a stiffer sidewall?

i have a friend who will buy these from me, and i was just hoping for some opinions from you guys on if it's worth it to sell them and spend the extra $$$ on some more expensive tires???

Did you have these tires on our last trip?
If not, do you have pics of new lift/tires?
That sucks if the tires are the cause of poor handling.

 

The truck will drive different with the 285's. You'll have to stop sooner and if you don't re-gear your acceleration will suffer.

It does take a bit of getting used to. I can honestly say I would buy Goodyear MT/R's again.

 

I also have BFG 285/75s on stock 16x7 wheels. I thought the same thing you did going into turns. Like Steve said it takes some getting used to but I would do it again also. Eventually I will go to 16x8s.

44 PSI seems like way pressure to much to have in your tires. Around town I run 32 PSI in my A/Ts . If you haven't done it already I suggest you do the Chalk Test . This will help determine the tire pressure that is right for you by looking at the tire/road contact patch.

 

16x7 are just not wide enough to accomodate a 285. 16x8s would be better, probably solve most of your problems. 16x10s would be the best route for a tire that wide, but might be hard to fit.

don't know how or why, but there has been a huge improvment in the feel of these tires. all of that sway i talked about appears to be gone (but obviously more noticeable than the 265/70's)

Well they look sweet! When I went from 31's to 33's i really noticed a diferance in the ride as well however it didnt take long to over come. now i couldent be happier with my BFG Allterain T/A's. will buy them every time!

What tire pressure are you running now? Those tires shouldn't be that much different compared to the more expensive ones. I still say it's the (narrow) wheels. 35-40psi should be about the range you'll want. What else did you change to get rid of the 'sway'?

 

i did absolutely nothing to the truck, it still flexes a little, but nothing that i wouldn't expect from a taller sidewall. running about 43 psi, gonna drop back down under 40 and see how that goes.
