Mrs. Schaefer is getting a 1993-1997 FJ-80! What do I need to know?

That right folks the 1999 4WD Honda CRV is hitting the highway and Erika will be driving / wheeling an 1993-1997 FJ-80. Solid Front Axle baby! Front, Rear and Center Lockers! At one time she drove the 4Runner. This is how I bring them in the corral, boys.

So What do I need to know. Target trucks are 1995-1997, with 1993-1994 as backup.

Tell me what you know? I'm gonna wheel the beast! We looked at FJ-60's but they are too old and need too much work.

I think the first thing you need to know is the name!

I believe the 1991 and 1992's are FJ80's whereas the '93-'97's are FZJ80's.

Good luck with this (finding the vehicle, not what they're called).

Edit: Ah, here's a link with some specs over the years:

Congrats Steve
Heck, don't show her these pics of John's '91, or she will be wanting to put 35s on it along with armor.

Oh yeah, the Naches baby

Then again...it would be cool if she wanted to mod it a bit.

Steve,
That's awesome that you have decide to buy a FZJ-80! I have seen some very nice ones in my club and could see myself in one eventually. They are big though.

I'll send you some e-mails with some info and options on the various years. It's was discussed lately on the Rising Sun board.

Scott

I'm pretty sure it will get sliders and an OME lift pretty quick.

Stuff you probably already know but:

The 93-94 doesn't have ABS and airbags. They all (93-97) had the option of electric factory lockers. The FZJ-80 has the 1FZ (4.5L) motor.

I have a 96 and love it. It doesn't have lockers but for what I paid for it I will put ARB's in it when it becomes a wheeler. It's a great truck. Unbelivable how well built it is.

Good luck on your search and keep us posted...................

I walk out in the garage. 2 front and rear locked Toyota's. IFS with a crawler and solid axle without.

Decisions, decisions, decisions.................................

Basically I'm hopeing she will want to go wheelin with me & the boys.

Anyone know how rare or common the front & rear e-locker models are? Build numbers?

I don't think it is extremely rare......they were an option and since most of these were bought for pavement queens they are fewer in number that ones without. Also when you do find one, sometimes the seller has no idea about the locker and so they don't know they have something a little more special. Just look for the little dial on the dash right next to where your left knee cap will be!

So it's safe to assume that they are not like the 4Runner with only a rear locker. If I find lockers it will be both front and rear. Did they come with only rear?

No, they did not. The with the dial you can select open, rear locked, front and rear locked. There is no locking just the front, no biggie, but a interesting little note...

Any of you LC guys figure out how to boost the gas mileage of these? My wife got to drive one over a weekend one time. She said she could watch the gas needle drop...about 11-12 mpg.:pat:

The easiast way to deal with the gas mileage on the LC's, is to not think about it. I am getting around 15 mpg in mine right now. That's not bad considering the lift, tires and roof rack slow me down a lot.

But, I like it so much, I wouldn't trade it for anything else. It looks like a tank, but drives better than my 4runner did.

I think the first thing you should know is that you can forget about your nice 4runner and any new mods. haha, you're gonna get into a whole new mods game with the FJ! haha. I wish I could find one of those {and afford to pick it up}. congrats.

Like 44 said if it has that option, it's front and rear. Also it has a center diff lock which come on all 93-97 and is engaged when it is dropped in low. The ABS will be turned off and the center diff will be on. You can get a switch......they are already wired for this......that you can switch on the center diff lock anytime.

Mine gets 12-15 mpg also so if you want a LC get used to the bad mpg's.........

The room inside is going to blow you away!

Here read this

She only drives a few miles to work and to the store anyway. Her cars always have ultra low milage.

I think the gas milage will be fine.

Thanks for the info.
