what do you guys think of this. of course, clean it up and make it look pretty but i think its a good idea as the stock roof rack will support 165lbs.

what, if any, hazards do you see with this? areas for improvement? to me, it looks alittle weak on where it mounts to the rack cross bars.

ALL opinions are welcomed and wanted. please say why you dont like it though.

ok, well im going to ask a newb question here.

why cant you throw your tire up there and secure it with tie downs then? isnt that easier than having to throw it up there and trying to find the stud for the wheel? it requires much less work and doesnt modify the vehicle from stock.

beyond that, i see a weak point where it attaches to the cross bars. i would make clamps that held onto the bars. something like: (a sideways view for ease of ascii art!)

the () being the rail (on its side, cross section), and the { } being the clamp.

 

I've always hated the look of tires on the tops of rigs. What a pain to get it on/off if you actually need it! I don't know if you are running 285's, but they are heavy! Plus the aerodynamics of the tire on top has to suck!

What's wrong with the stock location?

 

i would only use it while on the trail. here, theres alot of mud and it would be nice if i had to get the spare, i wouldnt have to dig in the mud!

true it will be a pain to find that stud....hmmmmm!

 

Just wait til the DA (and a Heep owner at that) comes to a sudden stop in a crash and the tire rips the roof rack off and it goes flying.

This is a bling mod that is stupid IMO cause a tire that small will fit in the OEM location or tied down in the cargo area. Trail only at best.

 

see, i see something i like, quickly i am reminded of the impracticality of it! why not! why not just stick it in the cargo area if its such a big deal! for trail only, i could just strap it down if i wanted it on the roof rack
i hate this place! only because opinions here make since to me and point out that money and time could be spent better elsewhere

so a 285/75r16 will fit in the stock location? did not know that, awesome! guess im buying 5 then...

 

Mine is on top for now. We went camping and the cargo area was packed full of supplies. To each his own I guess. I used the yakima tire mounting kit.

Im gonna see if I can fit one underneath and or im gonna build a rear tire carrier. thats it.
