Strange Problem 22re Idles but....

I have a 22re that will crank and idle for short period of time. If you press he accelerator or wait a few seconds the engine dies.

The diagnostic codes are 13 and 71 which seem to point to the distributor and the egr valve, but the symtoms seem similar to the Mass airflow sensor.

Does anybody have any thoughts on this?

I would check the EGR and distributor before messing with other things. You might break working things when the real problem is written down.

Welcome to the board!

As for your problem, have you done any work on the motor before you had these problems? I had a similar problem after my head gasket replacement, but it was because of a massive air leak around the lower intake. Perhaps you could check and make sure your distributor is in the right place as well if you did do work.

Thanks.

No engine work. It did sit for a while, but was running fine when it was parked.

I've reccomended the same thing to other people before (fix what the ecu says is wrong), but the symptoms just don't seem to match. Well, I guess the dist. part does if the advance isn't working when the accelorator is pressed.

I don't know, I just thought someone may have some additional insight.

the egr only operates about 2500 rpms unless its stuck closed which happens thats not yo you problem but if it was stuck it would barely idle. on these early pre obd trucks if the code is there its most likely the problem or related wiring. Just for the hell of it do a fuel pressure test to test the pump and regulaor
