136 miles on the rig when I gassed up this morning.
I think the dealer used 89 octane since that memo came out from Toyota stating you can run any octane gas.

But for the best overall performance and MPG, it is best to use 91 octane, which I did this morning.

I still had a tad over a half tank left, and it took 7.71 gallons to fill it.
It is a 19 gallon tank, so I still had 11.29 gallons left, over half.

I got 17.64 miles to the gallon, not bad for a new rig with the engine not broken in yet.

Was getting around 12 to 13 in the 4Runner.
I was getting about 180 miles out of a tank on the 4Runner when it was pretty low, so I know this rig is going to go a lot further between the pumps.

Gas mileage is of no real concern to me though.
If I was worried about it, I would have bought an econo-car.

 

Besides your engine not being broken in yet, it's also probably lower because you're enjoying the power of the 4.0L engine too.

 

He he, whats funny too is it accelerates so fast, and I hardly have the go pedal down.

I have to keep my eye on the speedo since the rig is so smooth, and it is very easy to speed in this thing.

I have not had a ticket since 1981, a week before I got married.
Was not a speeding ticket though, and it was thrown out later.

I have only had one ticket in my entire life.

 

It was hard enough to keep the speed down on my dad's '05 D-cab Longbed Tacoma. I can barely imagine the giddyup with the same engine on a significantly smaller platform like your FJ!

 

Nice! Enjoy it while you can. No telling if the dealer short-filled, either. This tank will be a better indicator I think.

The M/T's you have in mind will hit economy substantially. Though I'm still getting 14-15 city and 19-20 highway with the Nitto A/T's and 91 octane. Not bad for my shorter geared 6M/T.

These new generation engines using low-tension piston rings take at least 5K miles to fully run in. The synthetic changeover at that point will help, too, but it's still a 4,300 lib. truck with the aero of a brick.

 

Bob, after much thought too, and talking with mytruck (Jim) I am going to stick with 265x70x17 tires.
I think they are plenty big enough, and that is what the engine is geared for.

Those Coopers I have in mind are a better tire than the TXRs I have ran for years.

 

Which model Coopers? I don't recall from your earlier posts...

Bob, Les Schwab told me since these are a newer type of design, they work better than the TXRs (old design, been around for years) I ran before.
Bigger thread, but quieter.
I liked the loud hum of my TXRs, so noise is not a problem.

We put a 33" BFG KO of Jim's spare up against my rig today, and it looked good.
With the ARB lift on, the FJ can handle a 33" fine, but I think it may be best to stick with the same diameter tire so as to not screw up any computer related stuff.

I let Jim drive it today too, he liked the 4.0 and auto.
He also took a 6 sp for a demo drive a few months back with me down at Doxon's.

 

Great looking tire with serious specs. Might be too quiet for you, though! For comparison, my tire store gave me $200 credit for the OEM takeoffs toward the Nittos.

 

For what it's worth my speedometer is not thrown off significantly with my larger tires, nor have I had any computer issues. I can understand the desire to stay with the stock size, on the other hand the additional clearance larger tires buy you is quite beneficial in many situations offroad. I'm sure you'll enjoy your cruiser as much as I have, sounds like you're already well on your way!
Also FWIW, I haven't seen a very significant dip in MPG since I switched over to my 285/70/17 BFG ATs.

 

corey what kind of price have you been getting quoted over on the west side for those tires , i called around out here in spokane and came up with $1392.14 for 5 mounted , balanced , new stems and tax. that works out ot be $278.43 a piece.

the toyo mts i want were quoted ot me by les schwebs at $1700.00 for 5 , thats about $340 a tire , and thats not including tax.
as much as i want those mt's they may have ot wait until i can afford a bit more . the coopers are looking better and better , especcially since i wouldnt have to get new wheels , since the mts i want dont come in a 17 inch tire .

i called a few other places on this side of the state , $228.57 mounted and balanced and tax , from tire factory , apparetnly they are connected to the cooper factory some how and should always be the cheapest for them .

airrikk17, I Was quoted around $1,100, and I think that was the 285s.
Les Schwab claims they can not get me the 265s, so I may be going to Big O Tires, unless Les is willing to go the extra mile for me.
They should, I have been a customer since 1990 at my local one.

That was also for 4 tires.
Not sure if I am going to change out the spare or not.

I will find out more later this week.
I was just informed by Toyota when I dropped my rig off for the 3M Xpel treatment that I can not wash or wax it this coming weekend like I had planned.
It has to cure a week almost.

So that will give me time to mess around with plans for the CB where to put it, and I will swing by the tire shop to get more info on the Coopers.

 

I just passed 5,000 this weekend and was surprised to see the FJ (6 Speed) get just over 21 MPG, mostly highway around SF and greater bay area, some city driving though. Used '91 from the 76 station. Usually around town here in SD I get between 16 and 18. Everything is stock except for K&N filter and Rugged Trail 265's.

I've used '87 as well but I've noticed that with my particular style of driving it seems like it's actually cheaper to use '91 (specially on highway). I calc'd out something like 17.4 cents per mile with '87 and 16.7 cents per mile with '91. Throw in the fact you get 20-40 more miles per tank and that makes for filling up less often...anyhow just thought I'd share my observations which are by no means a very in depth study, just ballpark'd.

My guys at America's Tire Co. can get any brand, including those not listed on their site, at a great price. I found out accidentally when shopping for road racing tires. They beat the authorized Hoosier dealer price by a long shot and give generous trade credits. I got my current po' boy Nittos for $440 net including M+B+road hazard free replacement certificates. Might be worth it to stop in if you have one nearby.

I swung by there Saturday and showed them the sliderz.
They offered to wash my rig for me, and I obliged.

After it came out I was missing one 4' Firestik II antenna.
Their carwash broke the spiral wrapping off and ate it for lunch.
Completely destroyed my antenna.

The service manager use to be the mechanic who worked on my 4Runner, but now he is in service.
Today is his day off, and hw should be hunting me down an antenna, as I am not paying for it, they are.

I told him the closest place is Truck City CB out in Tacoma, so he has some driving to do.
