oil sender or gauge bad.1987 4-runner

I have replaced my oil sender unit 2 times[new]but my gauge does not move.A friend told me if I ground the wire going to the sender and the gauge needle goes up,then the gauge should be ok.It did go up when I did this.I have oil pumping up to the rocker arm.I don't have a pressure tester yet but that is my next step, unless somebody knows what my problem is. THANKS FOR ANY HELP. JIM

My 92 has a bad sending unit (I think). When I start the engine first thing in the morning, the guage goes about 3/4 of the way up. Once the engine gets warm it begins to drop, all the way down. As long as the engine is warm, the guage will not move the rest of the day. Once it gets cold again, it does the same thing, starts out going up to 3/4 of the way, then drops to nothing. I know it has be pumping oil as it's done this for many many miles.

oil sender

Hmmm, I just installed a rebuilt engine in my 94' from Overbore.com and my gauge reads low at idle...much lower then I would expect for a rebuild. It raises when underway but, I was wondering if maybe my sender is bad. Where about on the gauge should the needle be at and idle with a hot engine?

Test the resistance in the gauge itself. It should be ~40ohms.

There are at least 2 sending units for the gauge (not the idiot light). They don't seem to be compatible. I've been to toyota and they can't tell me which is which and I'm not going to try to guess at 57 a pop.

The FSM says that under idle, connect a bulb to the + on the battery terminal and then ground the other side of the bumb to the oil pressure sender. The FSM indicates that the sender should FLASH.

I'm having the same issue as you, my sender seems to change resistance with oil pressure... If I short the gauge through a light (don't short it directly, you're asking to burn it out) - the needle jumps. I just need to find the right sender.

is the above info also correct for the sender on a 3vze?

When i rebuilt mine and put it all back together it worked fine, but then i had some work done on it and it hasnt worked sence then.

I have a hard time beliveing the sender JUST went bad (but the starter did so go figure) i figured its a wireing thing but dont know were to start tracking it down at.

i have no needle movement at all on my gauge.

I suppose i could finnaly get that third auto lite guage for my gauge pod and convert to a real oil pressure gauge.
