CAM Bolts Again !

Special tool be damned I broke it again ! I read some posts way back about getting those CAM bolts out of a 3L V6 92 4runner and what was the real solution ? I know their not on there at 80 lbs which is what the book says.
My friend wants to use the belt to hold the cam pulley but the belt is new.
help - Ive got everything off just cant get these bolts, heck I'd pay someone to come help me get em off.

ok

You are talking about the bolts that hold the sprocket on? use an impact wrench place a long pry bar(or similar) in one of the holes in the sprocket and use the impact to loosen it! This method has yet to fail!

If you don't have access to an impact wrench, you can use this tool from harbor freight to hold the pulley while you loosen the nut. It worked for me, and it was less than $15 IIRC.

cam bolts

OK some good ideas , did some one say anything about lodging a socket between the cam and a bolt on the cam housing. I cant find how to jimmy something in the sprocket without it breaking ? I do have a impact hammer, I'm just worried about things comming apart if not lodged properly.
these cam sprockets dont have round holes more like a star.
Could wait till the weekend and visit Harbor F!
back to the grind

freakin finially

Got medevil on them bolts - pissed my buddy off so bad he left me to do it myself. Yep the ole jam a socket in the sproket with some help from a impact wrench did the trick along with a 4foot bar. I then proceded to break my 12mm socket on getting the head bolts out , split right down the side - more cheap chinese imported crappy tools..I should know better than to skimp on tools hell I'm skimping on the labor but if you want it done right do it yourself - and you might learn some thing. Heads in the shop now its gasket time and ....we'll see if I can get it all back togeather. Thanks for the help bra.

The bolts arent that bad IF you have the right stuff!

I got a 48" long piece of box tubing (1.25" wide square tubing), drilled two 1/2" holes through it about 2" apart and then bought some grade 5 7/16" carriage bolts that were 2" long. Then used that whole assembly to hold the cam sproket still while I used my trusty 24" breakerbar to take the bolt out.

worked like a charm!

OK So now the Head repair guy said the heads were in pretty good shape - humm
previous leak down test was bad on 3 n 4 and they ( the guys that do this for a living )said the valve stems were mushroomed out so what the fork. thing ran crappy - could it be the Rings are toast? Is there a sure fire way to tell? hate to put it all back togeather and it still runs on 4.25cy. Should I just drop the rest of the engine and have the rings done or suspect it was the heads n gasket someplace ? And whats with all the crud on top of the pistons looks like burnt sugar, how does one get these clean.
OH my the saga continues - the wife will kill me if I dont get the beast back togeather working after dropping 1000 into it.
