88 extended cab rear seat question

this is a VERY UNexciting question... i may buy an 88 extended cab pickup that has a shelf in the backof the cab... in a nut shell, i need to be able to replace the shelf with a forward facing seat (with seat belts) for my kids baby seats. what options did this truck come with for the rear cab? if this model came with forward facing seats, how difiicult is it to find the seat and seat belts?... any help would be appreciated...

The 88 xtra cab never had rear seats it only came with that little shelf. The back is not large [deep] enough to accomadate seats, also in an accident the back of the front seats could collapse and crush your kid[s]. Even the 89 and up xtra cab even though they have rear seats are not designed to have the child seat in the rear for this reason. The best advice I could offer would be to either trade it in for a 4runner or a tacoma dual cab. I don't know what the regulations are where you come from but if you are determined to put the kiddie seats in the back then you would have to frankenstein something to the floor to mount the seats and attach seat belts to but I would'nt do it myself. Sorry I could'nt help more Aviator

The xtracab seats in my 93 truck have a little plug that you can pull out and replace with this Toyota part/hook thing to help mount a forward facing child seat, but one of those newborn child seats where the kid faces backwards they won't work.

I'd say buy another truck in your case. There were never seats there and I think you'd be playing with fire if you tried to jimmy something up. Especially with your kids lives. Not saying you are a bad driver or anything, but I think most other people aren't very good.

There is no way you'll get another set of seats back there. There's not enough room.

Coed check your owners manual where it talks about the child seat anchor [which is available for free from the dealer by the way] it shows in the diagram that the child seat is to be placed in the front seat only.
My friend had one with his first kid and his wife had to ride in back behind him with her feet stuck out to the side to get leg room. They went through this until the kid was big enough to ride a booster seat in the back.
[His wife is a real trooper]
And I agree with what KLF said too.
Cheers Aviator
