Anybody ever put on a Cummins 4BT in a 2nd gen?

Cummins 4BT?

Apparently guys over on Diesel Place are swapping out their 6.5L turbo diesel v8s for these little 3.9L I4's and have MUCH better results across the board. 2x more power with very little modification and at least that much improved gas mileage.

So whose done it? Or even thought about it?

Someone put one in an FJ55, you seem to be the first to mention a 2nd gen swap so you get to show us how it's done

hahahahahahaha yeah right! (if i had a 4bt and an extra v6 toy pickup sitting here and about 2k of money burning a hole in my pocket I would! )

Just think if a 8000lb truck can get 24mpg with that engine what a little 91 toy pickup could get! 30mpg anyone? AND using biodiesel or WVO?

the biggest issue however that I can find out would be the engine height. Supposedly the fullsize C/K 4x4's have to have a 2" body lift to retain their 4x4 capability.

When hopped up supposedly this engine is capable of grenading the Dana 80 in the back end of a CK Dually!

I've heard of a guy who put one in a Blacer and got over 40 MPG. I don't know if it's true or not, but the possibility sure is interesting.

It's a TALL motor.
So you'd have to SAS the truck and lift it as well.

But I think it would be great to do.

I just wonder if the R150 in my 'runner would take the torque...

I looked at doing it but the motor is insanely tall. I thought about trying to machine the block and either destroke it or get new rods to make it a bit more managable. Also couldn't figure out what transmission to use.

I too looked into doing it a few years back, the issue is the running gear size. Can you imagine a NV 4500, or I would want the 5600 (6spd dodge tranny), full size xcase, and then dana 60's, if not bigger... I guess it can be done, gibby is running big runing gear, but man.... Since its a 5.9L missing two cylinders (kinda like a 4.3 v6) I would assume (you know what that means) that the bolt pattern for trannies is the same as for the 5.9...

An NV4500 will hold up to a 4BT fine.

There is a guy in utah that was running a 4BT-NV4500-NP231 setup in an FJ55. He was running an IFS minitruck rear end (whcih I think was silly) he ripped at least 1 of them in half...

I'd run a 4BT-NV4500-Dana300 setup with a GM 14bolt rear end.

That would be a sweet combo, I would want the 5600 for the 6th gear, the extra streagth would be a mute point :-)...

It would be a smart swap as well. Not only would you get insane low end torque, but the ability to use bio diesel, and the efficiency....man. Another good thing, you could drive it for years to come without the fear of running out of petrol, because I think bio diesel doesnt use fossil oil?

exactly!

How much of a body lift would one need to wedge it into our engine bays? Also guys are mating these up to 4L80-e's which are still big....BUT IF it could be done...there'd be some great benefits!

another interesting thought, though far less reliable, would be a 4L60 as whats found in most blazers...

hey what tranny does the current production trailblazer SS use?

Personally I wouldnt mate a 4L60 to a diesel....only a 4l80E that was behind a 6.5L..this is because it is designed to stay cool in the lower RPM range...(the problem late 90's dodge cummins had with autos wasn't that they werent strong enough, it was that they were deigned to stay cool in the V10 powerband, not the cummins). The 4L80E is a fantasic tranny...my dad has one in his 454 burb...a few years back I querried tranny shops about 4L80E failurs, they said there was nothing consistant...they just run and run and run....

What about running a alison 1000 series...just need to find an adapter...

We've been happy with the 4L80e behind our 6.5LTD. I just wish the damn thing wasnt so freaking huge! (I also wish that 6.5 was as reliable as the damn tranny with the OPS, PMD, and IP regularly dying....arrrg)

Hmmm allison tranny, cummins powerplant, and a toyota body? Sounds like heaven to me! lol

Mmm... I wouldn't put an american diesel in a Toyota... Don't want to sound like a jerk, but there are better engines for sure, but I agree, difficult to source in the States.

I uh, actually dont think there is a better diesel than a Cummins....If there is, I havent heard of it.

As for the tranny..that is really going to depend on how much you turn up the boost

Agree.... Cummins destroys the Hino and Toyota diesels, not that they are bad...just not as good.

Caterpillar may be a bit better, IMHO, but they dont offer an engine in the 4BT class, otherwise I would have mentioned it.

There are several trannies that would work very well with this combo, all american...At this point though, its a bit too late to be seeing international colors ... The whole drivetrain would be American...there just isnt anything else I can think of to take the redneck muscle :big2:
