hey guys im new to this forum just got my truck so heres my first rig

its an 88 4cyl 4x4 reg cab runing 146k. Its got a 4inch suspension lift and i think 2inch body, its got 35s on the back and 33s in the front the head gasket and the clutch have recently been changed, it did make a noise and i had a friend thats experienced with 22re's take a look he said it was the timing chain and it needed to be replaced. Its got some body rust on the outside of the bed, its also got a hydraulic lift under the bed that tilts it. thats about it, im in the market for some tires the 33s have good tread but the 35s have like 20% left so when buying tires should i just put 35s in the back or 33s, also its not registerd so just out of curiosity how fast would it be able to go on the highway and what gas mileage am i looking at suggestions are great fully appreciated !

ide also like to know how much u guys think i should have payed for it or just its street value

why the odd tire size? did he regear the back and not the front or something? i would definately ask the previous owner about that first before buying new tires...if he did regear and you use 33's front and rear it can tear your truck apart in 4wd

well if there was no gearing issue i would probably take off the body lift and buy all 33s. im not a big fan of body lifts and i hear alot of bad things about BL over 1 inch. but thats a sweet lil first truck. i love those years. 1st gen 4runner 2nd gen truck (maybe 3rd gen depending on who you talk to) and only 146,000 miles, thats awesome.

 

drop down to 33s if there is no gearing issue, and i would do the timing chain right away. Good luck and nice truck.

whats wrong with a body lift, and i do plan to take it out but i dont no many places i just moved to dearborn, mi i just came from tampa fl and i know where most of the mud holes and trails r at bur not sure about the ones up here

 

Body lift is a crutch ,not much use ,you don't get any more ground clearance ,its mainly used to be able to fit larger tires, but its not really worth it , just remove the lift and get some ball joint spacers and some shakles for the rear and stick some 33's on it and have fun

 

if you get 33s and it hasn't been regeared, you could proabably expect to not be able to go but about 80, maybe less. If it has been regeared then you'll be able to go 90...not that I would. I've had my 4runner up to 100 before...it's not fun.

Also, I would bet you get between 15-19mpg. If it's running well. If you have the right gears it should get more. I average 18 in mine with 4.10s and 31" tires, I need to regear.

if it has been regeared by the previous owner...you need to find out why he has bigger tires on the back, if the gears are stock then just drop down to 33's and take off the bodylift, you wont need it

 

It largely depends what your doing with the truck and what you want out of it.
But based on what you've said/asked thus far, i think you should remove the BL and slap some 33's on.

 

There is absolutely nothing wrong with a body lift at all... Those guys are smoking crack or something.

I put a 3" BL on my truck about 10 years ago and it has never reminded me it is even there.

I agree the only thing it does is allow you to run bigger tires, but that's all its supposed to do. It gets the body up and let's you run bigger tires.

I would definitely ditch the 33's up front and go with the same size tire all around. If 35's fit and don't rub more than you're prepared to deal with run them.

If a body lift kit is properly installed I can't possibly see what problems you could ever have with it. All it does is lift up the body, the suspension stays exactly where it was when Toyota built it. How could that possibly be a problem?

I have heard about the pucks deteriorating, but I guess I bought a quality kit because mine have been fine. I have put 180k on my truck since I put the lift on and I used to go off road all the time and it has been fine.

If you have 35's on the back and are happy with the acceleration I would guess the previous owner did change out the gears. These trucks are pigs with big tires and no regear.

You're going to have to find out for sure though. Even running the same gears with different size tires front to rear can be a big problem when you lock it in 4 wheel drive. You can't guess here unless you have a large savings account. Ask him.

well i dont like the looks of a body lift. i dont like seeing everything under a truck. especially if everything else is stock and you have a 3 in BL on it. looks stupid in my opinion. and if you have stock gears i can imagine how un godly slow your truck will be with all 35s. defenetly check into your gearing. if you have 4.10 all the way around i would not go bigger than 33s. my dad regeared his 86 4runner to 4.56 and runs 31s he tells me all the time he would never want to go bigger than that with that gearing because of the power loss.

 

you could probably drive it pretty fast on the highway assuming you dont mind the terrible gas mileage, and the howling of the tires.

 

Nice truck. As far as one of your questions of the street value of it, I would probably say it is worth $1,000 OBO. That is just a guess, of course. (By the way, a truck like that goes really cheap around where I live, so I am not trying to put down yours.)

Now, you said you are planning to take it out, but how much? If it were me, and I weren't going to take it out that much, I would probably stick with 33's and get rid of the BL, just to save on gas. If you do plan on taking it out quite a bit, I would stay with the BL and have 35's running all around. I think somebody said to ask the original owner if he/she did anything to the gears, which is a very good idea. If they said they didn't do anything, and they are the original owners of the truck, I would probably stay with 33's, if that.

 

guys i put it in 4x4 today and it made a really weird laod noise and the truck kept dyeing, then i shut it off and put it away and tried a gain later and it was gone.
