No more hard drive?

so i have this laptop, and the other day i got a BSOD (blue screen of death) and the machine shut down. then when i try to turn it on it cant detect the hard drive. The cdrom works great, but hard drive is like it's not their. So i replaced it with another one i know works, and still nothing it says check cables or power. and that it can't find any hard drive. So now i am thinking maybe it's a hard drive controller on the MOBO, but why does the cdrom drive work? any ideas? or if you know of a way around this, maybe a hard drive i could put in the cdrom bay? I am about out of ideas.

The hard drive controller wouldn't make the CD-Rom stop working, especially on laptops. They're separate controllers. If you've tried one that you know works and no go, you might have to just replace the mobo. If you do have a modular drive and there's an enclosure available, you could move it over to the modular bay (cd-rom) bay. That's a less desirable solution, but it would still work.
