I am about to take my girls on vacation to New Mexico and am a wee bit concerned that my tires are a little worn.

I don't have any idea how many miles are are them, they came with the 4Runner when I bought it last year. I have 92K on the vehicle, they are Goodyear Wrangler RTS and the rear tires are almost to the wear indicator bars. The fronts are better and are not there yet.

I really can't afford to buy new tires $600, etc. right now so I would like some opinons from more seasoned veterans on tires. I should have money for new tires this fall.

Opinions????

 

A pic would help. But if you are down to the indicator bars, don't chance it. Temps are hot right now and you are driving a vehicle known for rollovers over certain speeds. Best case scenario, one blows and you put the spare on. Worst...well, you know. While I am NEVER an advocate of putting something on a Credit Card, this might be one of those times. Safety comes first. My vote is get new tires or don't take the trip.

 

find the 2 that are worst and replace those....

find someone in your area selling a set of 50% used ones cause they just put on new wheels/tires... (happens all the time in the club i hang with)

Yep...actually a friend just came up with a very novel solution.

The spare is a new tire of the same model...so I am going to have it swapped on and buy one new tire of the same model...poof...new rear tires! Pay about $130 and I am done!

 

You want the best tires in the front, regardles of the fact its a 4wd rig...

I would run em... but I havent seen a pic.. but why put 1200 miles on new rubber?

 

ok, so ive always learned that if you are goin to do anything you replace the rears no matter FWD or RWD. the front is mainly for the steering so if you are goin to fast you can always brake and regain control, but if your rears are worn you fishtail no matter what and you eat it.

 

Both Michelin and Goodyear agree with you, best tires should always go on the back, dosen't matter if its FWD, RWD or 4WD

Whatever you do, put the best (or new) tires on the front. If you have a blow out, it would be better on the rear than on the front. AND better tread on the front would provide better control of the vehicle while driving.

too bad it wasnt 2 mos ago, i would have given you 2 decent michlen ltx m/s tires that came off my car when i swapped wheels.

The nice thing is that we drive the long distance at night. So heat is usually not a factor. I have found that West Texas goes by much faster in the dark for some reason. Plus the cool night air and less traffic make it a very pleasant drive. About 9-10 hours to Albuquerque from Fort Worth. We start around 6pm and pull in around 3-4am. Works out wonderful.
