Hi Folks... this is going to be the first in a series of polls I am posting for the City and County of San Francisco so that they can keep the coast beautiful and make oil collection easier for all of us!



The first question is... how did you first learn about what to do with your used motor oil / filter. Please choose an option and specify (if it isn't obvious) the country, state, and city you are from. Also please mention if your response applies to both the oil and filter, or just one or the other.

Went to Canadian Tire, and asked if they take old oil...they said yes.

 

Advance Auto gladly takes you oil!!!!!! simply drop it there!!

 

Ive always recycled Motor oil or oil in general, THe filters I toss because the stores around here are jerks.
Its been hard in the beginning, Though it was manditory to take it to some sort of recyclecenter the centers wanted to charge a waste disposal fee, I fought hard to tell them they cant do that, Some places will claim there full or there tank is gone or just some other way to not make an effort to take your used oil.
The filters I still cant get them to take unless its a city center.

 

Well, the navy facilities I use take your oil and your filter for free.

 

i just toss the filter out usually. take my oil to the local landfill, there's a collection center there.

 

usually just toss the filter and I take the used oil down to shucks and dispose of it there.

 

Since most people that end up with used oil and filters are the folks that are also buying new oil and filters it makes sense to maximize point of sale recycling options and infomation.

In Orange County, the Health Care Agency has a very good working relationship with auto parts stores such that they get great cooperation in the used oil recycling program. If you have a complaint about lack of cooperation from an auto parts store you might think about registering a complaint with your local CUPA. Their permit(s) might be contingent upon their participation in the used oil recycling program.

Don't forget about your local Household Hazardous Waste Center! That's a great place to get rid of a whole lot of stuff that doesn't belong in the trash, down the drain, into the gutter, or in a hole in the back yard. Here's the link for the OC HHWC

I learned to do my own oil changes back when I was in the Marines.
I toss the filter & take the used oil to the recycling center for free.

 

I toss the filter and put the used oil on the side of the street and the recycle people come and pick it up yay for oregon and their recycle programs.

 

Oil and filter go to recycling center.

 

i just dig a hole....next to the lake....pour the oil in it and sink the filter when its full.









































j/k.....really? take it to an auto store is prob the easiest! does ANYONE not know where to take oil?

 

Where ever you buy your oil from they should take it back the used oil!!!
Cause we all pay for that damn ECO FEE to pay for the dispose of the used S***!!

 

Oil is pretty easy to recycle, there are lots of places to take oil. The filters are certainly a larger problem. I usually let them drain out for a long time, about a week. At my work there is a crusher which squeezes out all the old oil and reduces the size of the filter to approximately 1/3 its original size.

I currently live in Yakima, WA. Recycling sucks, not even brown beer bottles are recycled. When I lived in Portland, OR recycling was awesome. Everything curbside. The city of Portland put out a brocure everywhere (auto stores, home centers, schools, etc.) telling you where all the dumps were located and what could be recycled and where.

I think a lot of people don't recycle because it's inconvenient. There should be more curb side service and more days (and locations) where you could take all your recycling somewhere in your local neighborhood. And more education in schools about recycling.

 

Never pay to have your old fluids disposed of as almost all places get PAID for them by someone else that recylcles/cleans them. I take all mine to the dealer, drive into the service bay around back, dump it in a techs container(s) and drive away. Been doing this a while...makes them money and saves me the hassle of having to haul it inside a store somewhere.

 

hmmmm 15 years ago (back in memphis TN) my dad made araingements with a local shop owner to dump off his used oil there. that lasted for about 5 years till the shop closed. Shortly after that the local parts places started takeing for free.

When i moved to STL theres an advance on my corner and as you walk in on the door there is a little sign that says "we recycle used motor oil" or something to that effect.

My local landfills have oil collection centers. Damn near every storm drain is etched with this:



Though I haven't personally done a change in the rig, my friend that distributes Amsoil usually collects it and sends it somewhere that pays him...

 

I've been changing oil since I was little, and I learned from my dad. We always tossed the filters, and saved the oil, When we got about 20 gallons or so, we ran it down to the county recycling center. Although, we would use a lot of it, whenever we ran gas pipe, we used it as cutting oil, and same thing for various other kinds of work, so we basically recycled about 1/5 of it ourselves.

My grandfather taught me to use filtered used oil to lube the chainsaw. The remainder gets brought to the County Recycling Center 5 gallons at a time. The filters get drained for a couple days, then I put them in with the trash.

 

I drain and toss the filter and take the oil to the local auto parts store.
