Linksys router - add new mac address (new computer)

At my work we have a protected network that allows only certain mac addresses to connect. I just got a new laptop, I have the mac address, and I also have the LAN IP of the router, but when I put it in Internet explorer to connect to the router, msn search comes up and says it cannot find the ip address. Can anyone help me? Thanks!!!

I disabled the search function in IE, but I still get an error, this page cannot be displayed. Our computer company gave us all the passwords and ip addresses, but somehow I still cannot connect to configure the router. I have tried both plugged directly into the router, and wirelessly.

You have to log into the router from a computer that's already allowed. You should also never tinker with a router wirelessly.

well I am working from a computer that is allowed, both wirelessly and wired. I am also connected (wired) right now on this new computer to the router and the internet works fine. I just need the wireless to work since there is a wireless printer in our office

just a feel for the setup:

AT&T -> SonicWall -> 3Com Firewall/router -> Computer wall outlets/linksys router.

So the linksys router is at the end of the chain, so I suspect that the other firewalls are not interfering with what I am trying to do.

What's happening is the router is blocking your new laptop's MAC address. You have to log into the router and add the MAC address to it's list of allowed addresses from a computer that's both wired and allowed.

The office computer is both wired and allowed, still not able to get to the linksys login screen. I called the computer company that gave us the sheet, but now they just want to come out, lol. I know its hard to do over the phone for them, but I dont want them out here just for this

Are you sure the IP you have is right? Check your IP on the machine that's connected. The first three sets of #'s will be the same as the router's ip, and the last will be 1 (usually).

Example:

If your IP is: 192.168.1.100
Your router's IP will be 192.168.1.1

not necessarily....

here's the sure way to find your router's ip address from a machine already wired into the network (in windows, i assume?)
go to start -> run
then type in "cmd /k ipconfig /all" and hit ok (without the quotes)
look for the "default gateway" address for your current connection (ethernet card)

THAT's your router address.

edit: open up internet explorer or firefox or whatever browser and type in http://<router ip address>

yup, tried that, still cannot login to the router. I think the computer people are a little stumped too, any more ideas? I also pinged that address and got a reply. I really dont want to have to get them out here for something that should be so simple. I set up our secure wireless network at my home, and I can easily configure the router, I actually think it is the same model as the one at my work, so I do know what I am doing. I don't think it is anything to do with internet explorer, since I also tried it with my old powerbook (that was authorized to connect) and the powerbook couldnt find it either.

ummm... you have access to the physical router, right? Reset it... It'll go back to the defaults (including password) then they (or we!) can walk you through setting it back up to be secure.

without using the little reset button (that wipes out all your settings) try just pulling the plug, and plugging back in.

yea I tried the unplugging thing, didnt work. I really dont want to reset the thing, actually Im not going to reset the thing, I would call the computer people before I would reset the router, lol. I can connect to the internet with a cable and it works fine, I just cant print wirelessly, so not a huge problem, just an inconvenience

Is there a proxy server? How about access to a DNS server?

If a local router doesn't have access to a DNS server then a user wouldn't be able to access the internet.

the computer company said something about dhcp, but I believe that has something to do with the router that is directly connected to AT&T

does the laptop have an IP address? you might want to release / renew it just to make sure dhcp is working
