i have a problem. when i turn my 4runner off, my electric fan under my hood keeps spinning. it stays on for a very long time. about 1-2 hours after my runner is shut off. when i get out i have to literally bang on my front bumper or hit the top of my hood and then the fan will shut off. when my runner is not on and then i open my door and shut the door..the fan will turn on. so can anyone tell me what the problem is or give me any suggestions? thanks

 

connect the relay, or whatever power source you use, to a source that is only on with the ignition. that way the fan will only operate when the truck is running (when it needs to).

there is almost never a need to run the fan after shutting the engine off.

 

I agree- mine is wired that way, and I have a manual shut off switch in the dash. I've never had any trouble with battery drain.

 

I wired mine to a power source that's always on (the battery) and I have never had any trouble. What kind of fan are you using? I have the flex-a-lite for toyotas, 165.

 

sorry i think i caused some type of confusion..i do not have an after market fan installed..it is the factory kind.. so i guess that makes it not an electric fan...everything on my 4runner is stock...and this problem just started about 1 week ago...i have not done any type of work under the hood so for the member that reply and said something about the wire set up...i dont really understand wht u are saying because the set up should be stock. i hope that clears up any confusions caused...but i really need to fix this problem if not my battery will die every time on me.. thanks you

 

Hmmm...since the factory engine cooling fan is purely mechanical running off of pulleys, there must be something wrong with your electric AC fan. It should only run when your AC is on.

In the mean time, you'll want to disconnect your battery or the fan so you don't drain your battery.

 

Did you buy this 4runner used and not know it might have an aftermarket fan?

 

I've seen 4runners with a factory e-fan in front of the AC condensor. Sounds like maybe a stuck relay or something.

 

I had the same problem.That AC fan would kink on evry time I slammed the door, or if it was on...would turn off. Can't remember what I did to fix. Sorry for the no help.

 

Had this problem on mine after an accident. Seems a wire was stripped and the AC fan would randomly ground itself and run the battery down. There's a fuse under the hood you can pull for a temporary fix, or you can disable it and only run AC while the car is moving.

The "wire it to the ignition" idea is one we considered, but I had the dealership fix it for a bit over $100.

Worth it, IMHO.

 

thanks guys for the input...i found a wire that was disconnected yesterday when i jump started my car...once i touched the wire the fan shut off...ill try to take a picture of teh exact wire and maybe someone can help identify a solution for me to do based on the picture or something..well thanks again guys for teh help
