calling all regeared v6 3rd gens

Looking for some real world input from you folks... trying to make some decisions about my truck and regearing might be an option. Considering the direction gas prices are going, I want to have some idea what to expect should I end up regearing.

So, my questions for you...

What year is your truck?
What tires are you running (size and type)?
Auto or manual transmission?
What gearing are you running?
What's your typical gas mileage?
What's your typical driving like (all highway, aggressive, lots of towing, etc.)?

Thanks everyone.

What year is your truck?
1996

What tires are you running (size and type)?
315/75/R16 Goodyear MTR's

Auto or manual transmission?

What's your typical gas mileage?
12-City, 16 Hiway

What's your typical driving like (all highway, aggressive, lots of towing, etc.)?
Grandma driving. I drive very slow, since I have too much lift and no swaybars. I go about 70mph on the hiway and get 16mpg everytime.

I had no idea that guys running 4.88's with 315's are getting similar gas mileage. I thought it would definetly be increased?!

285, Bridgestone Dueler Revo's

16mpg - city (mix)
18mpg - highway only

Mix of highway and street.
Not aggressive... maybe except for highway ramps some times
No towing, but:
- ARB bumper and 12K winch up front
- 2 TrailCarnage skid plates (1/4" steel)
- RockSliderZ
- SonoranSteel bumper in the rear
- Trunk full of heavy gear

Basically going from 4.11 to 4.88 is (very roughly) proportional to the switch from 31's to 35's (both up 2 sizes). I got what I expected - similar gas mileage (all things being equal) and similar performance in terms of torque off the line, etc.

I actually get better than 17 mpg depending on time of year. That is average. Blasting AC in Phoenix heat can hurt my economy during the summer months.

OK, so what I'm getting from this thread and some posts I found while searching, there isn't enough of a mpg gain to justify regearing. Granted, I'd regear for other reasons, but the mpg could have proved to be a justification for my wife.

I have 33" MTs with the stock 3.90s (1996 V6 auto) and get 14-15mpg. I wasn't hoping for miracles, but was hoping I might get close to 17-18mpg.

i get 17-18 on the highway...

What year is your truck? 1999 Limited
What tires are you running (size and type)? 305/70-16 MT/R's (33/12.50's)
Auto or manual transmission? Auto
What gearing are you running? 4.56 Yukons
What's your typical gas mileage? 16 MPG City and 17-18 Highway
What's your typical driving like (all highway, aggressive, lots of towing, etc.)? Mostly Highway, NOT-aggressive, NO TOWING, but I do have a ton of extra weight - sliders, ARB Lockers (rotational mass), 8" wide wheels (more rotational mass), Front & Rear bumpers, Winch, Sub w/ Box, and typically loaded to the gills with luggage, etc. I'm not a granny, but I don't get on it. I typically stay around 75-78 MPH on the highway and get a consistent 17-17.5 MPG and an occasional 18 MPG if the terrain is flat. It's pretty hilly here in E-Tenn and on our trips for the first 200-300 miles when heading south, then it flattens out a little, but still not extremely flat.

Seems like if you stuck to the 33's and went to 4.56, you can get to the 17 mpg range, no? What am I missing?

I regeared because I got huge tires not because I wanted better gas mileage. If you want good gas mileage, keep 3.90 or 4.11 and get a 30" tire, IMO.

^ you might want to check some things. thats not normal.

same as insr5runner....stock gears, but giving you some more numbers:

99 supercharged
305/70/16 m/t's
manual
4.10's
15.8 mpg avg. all together, dont know how it breaks down
80% city, 20% highway

by the way, i cleaned my throttle body and got 1mpg increase.

you should consider swapping out your front O2 sensor. my MPG tanked like that and i swapped it out for less than $100 (http://www.urdusa.com) and the MPG jumped back up to 17-18 range. it was "bad", but not bad enough to throw a code.
