On the other hand I remember when I read there about diesel for Jeep and... there it is.

 

Well with a redesigned toyota real full sized truck, why not a diesel to go along with it

 

Its about time! I hope its as reliable as a regular Yota

 

It's only going to be in the Tundra though.

American market favours bigger diesels in bigger pickups and up...
That would be a nice begining though...
With the gas prices closing gap to European levels, maybe Toyota will start
to consider selling HERE smaller diesel engines they sell there.
For sure I wouldn't mind 3.0 TDI in my 4Runner...
high torque at low-RPM's...
30MPG's don't sound too bad to me either...

I actually did some googling around because of that and found several articles.
In short it looks like the problem in US is around 2 contradicting things.
1) high expectations for small emissions of sulfur for smaller diesels (big trucks have their own rules for now).
2) poor quality of diesel fuel in US.

But there is some light as in 2009 some kind of stricter norms will arrive - both for engine emissions and for diesel fuels.
The projections say that because of the above we should start seeing new diesels in fall of 2008,
when 2009 models will start to sell.
Maybe that is what the note in Four Wheeler had in mind.

I'd love to see some small diesel engine powered vehicles. If only BioDiesel was more readily available....

With VW now using the small 1.9L TDI and the big V10 TDI as well as MB now shipping a E class w/ CDI I think it's safe to assume that America's outlook on diesel will evolve as gas prices increase. We still have the cheapest gas in the free world, but hey, I hope the prices hit $4-5 gallon if it means people will rethink buying a Tahoe or Expedition. I really hope we get a 3.0TDS Prado engine over here, it's long overdue. The more diesel vehicles we get the more the fuel companies will refine it.

 

It's still only on par w/ the F-150, which is no where close to the size of the F250/250 or the other's big 3's 2500 and 2500 series. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see a Tundra diesel, but by American standards, it'd need to go into a much bigger truck.

 

The new Tundra that was just unveiled is going to be bigger then an F-150. Then the true 4 door that they haven't unveiled yet is supposed to be bigger, i'm guessing 3/4 ton instead of 1/2 ton. That's the one that will get the diesel. As it is with the new 5.7 and the 6 speed auto, it has a rated towing capacity of 10,000 lbs. Throw a diesel in a little bigger truck and you should be able to see 14K-15K lbs no problems.
