How much lift can you put in the rear before you need to replace the stock trailing arms with longer ones?

With the stock ones, as you lift it, the trailing arms also pull the axle forward. By my *very rough* math, about 1/2" for every 1" of lift. I realise that the longer springs also give a little more leway for not having the spring perches not centered on each other. But in general, how much before it becomes an issue?

 

I dont know that longer arms are even that good of an answer, sure your WB is back to original, but when you stuff you find the rear 1/4 panel.

I think the factory susp is only good for 3" with out drop brackets, and I dont like the drop brackets, so 3"...then IMO you need to do a leaf swap...

I ran 4.5" lift with the stock arms, no drop brackets, for about 4 months before my leaf swap....wasn't an issue to answer you main question.

 

More so sheer curiousity. But I honestly hadn't though about the fender wells when stuffed.

I just installed my OME coils (pics to come...when I can get them), and am pretty happy so far. If I want to go high, I'm using leafs...or a custom 4-link (dreaming out loud).

 

Does anyone have any ideas on doing a 4 link in the back?

I am starting the SAS on my 90 4runner and am still debating what to do for the rear.

Any thoughts???

 

IMO, PITA...I toyed with the idea prior to the leaf swap...The gas tank would have to be moved to get the proper length/angle on the upper link. and there isnt really room for coil-overs unless you put them in the back seat... you could do a 2 link with panhard bar...Fabtech has some arms the might work??

 

Are you talking about the wish-bone set up they have?

But if the gas tank has to be moved it probably wont fly, i have visions of putting the tank from my 83 donor in the spare tire location.

Any thoughts on a good leaf spring set up. i keep hearing and seeing people using chevy springs.

 

Not the wishbone, thats for a 3 link....They have arms that fork at the end so you grab the axle in 4 places, but the frame in two.

I used 56" alcans, I do know a fair amount of people use chevies... I had great luck with the alcans... In fact they are for sale.... too stiff on my 92 reg cab...
