Hello all, looks like I blew a pump seal in my A340H tranny at 200K miles. She was slipping badly and shifting hard, even with a new torque converter.

So.....

Where is a good place to get a new A340H?

Also, is removal and replacement a DIY job? Are there any tech articles
out there? A quick search did not reveal much.

I have one, chebby has one...

removal is a MAJOR PITA, but can be done by a DIY. bout a 4 out of 5 wrenching level because of the number and assortment of tools it will take to get it out.... nothing terabily skillfull, just lots of bolts to get at in virutally impossible locations.

 

I can't imagine pulling the trans without at least unbolting the motor and moving it forward a hair to get to the bolts on tops of the bellhousing. Mine took some force to break free.

 

the first time i pulled the tranny it took me 3 hours the second time i pulled one it was done in under an hour. for the top 2 bellhousing bolts get a 3 foot extension and a breaker bar go inside the truck through the shifter or if ya got room just go underneath. id reccommend a tranny jack or and adapter for a floor jack $40 bucks at autozone and a tie strap. its cake to do just all you need is a 12,14,17,19 mm sockets and various extensions.

 

Yes, go in from the shifter for the top ones. You have to remove the shifters anyway. It is easier then lifting/tilting the engine.

I'm setting up to do mine, and that's what I was told by my local Toyota Master Tech Dude who's been prepping me on the how to.

 

Wish I knew this before. Guess it will make reinstall easier.
