I've got 135,000 miles on my 98' TRD 3.4, and lately, I've noticed that it seems to be accellerating rather poorly. I almost want to say that it hesitates, but that would be a bit too strong of a statement. It is especially pronounced when it is cold.

Additionally, once it hits about 3,300 rpm, suddenly, it comes to life, almost like a turbo just kicked in.

Any suggestions/ideas what it might be, and what a possible fix might be?

 

dont know what you should do but i have a 4runner that does the same exact thing.

 

We need to know the history of the vehicle...maintenance, etc. What have you looked at? Is the e-break adjusted properly?

It could be a million things, help us narrow it down.

 

The ebrake is adjusted. As far as maintenance, I replaced the spark plug wires and spark plugs about 20,000 miles ago. I change the oil regularly. When reviewing my records to answer your question, I noticed that I haven't changed my air filter in 25,000 miles! That might be my answer right there.

Yeup... Also clean the MAF, clean the Throttle Body, change the fuel filter, (see the Tech Section for more info on those), install a supercharger (use SEARCH for that... )

I know I'm going to sound like an idiot, but I looked through the tech section, and couldn't find the MAF reference. What is it, and how do you clean it?

Any check engine lights?

 

The MAF is that silver section of pipe that comes right after the air box with the electrical harness on top. Just unbolt it from the air box and take off the pipe clamp on the other end. then clean it, I like to blast it with compressed air. I dont really know if it would get eaten by some powerful solvents so tread lightly.

 

Ummm... depending on the PSI in that blast of air, you can destroy the wires in the MAF which let it do it's thing - a new one will run you $300. Plus, forcing air into road grime (i.e., grease) won't necessarily blow off said grime, and if it does, it will just cram said road grime somewhere else in the device.

Use solvents, as outlined in the articles in the tech section. That will dissolve said road grime and make it a non-issue.

 

What kind of plugs did you use when you changed them. Also did this problem start before or after the plug change.

 

I had the same thing happen to my 2000 4runner accompanied with the P0171 code. Basically I cleaned the MAF sensor with electrical cleaner and nothing. Still had the Check Engine Light and sluggish acceleration exactly as you described. Finally I went to the import junk yard and ordered a MAF for around 60 bucks. The MAF on the camry and some other Toyotas are all the same so it is not hard to find. Once the "new" MAF was installed (two simple screws) and the negative terminal on my batt disconnected to reset the ECU....voila! She drives like she used to now! I would try a new MAF before anything else! Hope that helps.

BTW, I used part number 22204-21010 which is a direct replacement. Dragr1 on this forum says they have a new part number 22204-07010 which is apparently a redesign of the MAF since they seem to be touchy!
