I want some 265/70/16 BFG All-Terrains. The Big 10 tires here quoted me $798 installed.

Is that a good deal, or there better to be had?

Freakin A, they are actually introducing a new version of the All-Terrains and the price is jumping even freaking more. This sucks. Summit has one of the old ones left, which doesn't help much.

It's not a new design, just some new compound or something. Nothing special.

 

have you checked out the other brands? like the Nitto Terragraplers or Cooper Discoverer STT or the Cooper Discoverer ST.
Someone found the Nittos for $101 shipped in 265/75-16. You should look into that size. They're comparable to 32"x11.5"x16"

Yep, Second that size, 265/75 R16's You'll get more tire choices. My qoute was $818 for BFG KO's 265/75R16..

 

That is an insanely high price for tires. You can get revos for far less (mine were about $610 out the door). I've owned both brands and IMHO, the revos are far superior in every aspect. I have 30k on my revos and their performance still amazes me. I expect to get another 20k out of them. I doubt you'd even get 30k out of the bfg's. I never did...

 

I know eveyone loves BFGs, but there are many tires just as good for far less $$$. I think I priced the Coopers at around $550 mounted and balanced. They're just all terrain tires, if you want traction get a locker. If you want cool looking tires, get Nittos for almost half that price.

 

My ex-girlfriend just purchased 265/75R16 BFG All-Terrain KO's for $735 out the door from Americas Tire Center last week. I had them balance the tires with the Hunter 9700 & 6 lug adapter...drool. She put 60k on her last set of BFG's with no problems so I went with those again.

 

BFGs are a great off road tire but not the greatest choice if it's a daily driver as their pavement manners in the wet and dry (especially in the wet) leave alot to be desired and this is from experience. Nittos are much better AT daily driver tires for the $$$ and they resist hydroplaning quite well and rock in the snow and slush. Revos might be the best overall tire if off roading isn't the main concern and they have a 50k mileage warranty.

Most people buy BFGs based on looks plus everybody has 'em so it's a popularity thing too. Do some research and you'll see there's better choices out there and for less money. My Nittos cost just over $200 less than the same size BFGs from Discount.

 

When you buy tires, spend a half hour or 45 minutes with your Yellow pages open to the Tire section. Get an "out the door" price on the model and size you want from everybody. "Out the door" meaning: tires, mounting, balancing, disposal, road hazard, tax, etc... then find out if they have them in stock. Then take the cheapest price and call the guy who has them in stock, and see if he'll beat that price. You can work all the local shops like that... you'll know when they're at the lowest they'll go. I've done this numerous times with both 4x4 and sports car tires. You'll be surprised at how much the price changes when you tell a guy the shop down the street is $75 lower. But don't lie to them - sometimes they'll call the other shop to double check - which is fine by me.

I got my BFG's for $757.67 OTD. Had them installed the next day in less than an hour. $663 for the tires and the rest was labor, tax, etc. Mileage was 78,861. I'm now at 122,8xx and they aren't even half worn. I've had about 4 or 5 sets of BFG A/T's on a few different trucks and to me, they're well worth any premium over another comparable tire. This is all opinion of course.

Just a question since I don't have any experience with them - but how much mileage can one expect from Revo's or Nitto's or others? As Mac posted, I fully expect 60k out of these BFG's.

 

Most people I know with BFGs do see 60k but most also report that they get hard and their dry grip becomes less after 40k (or a couple of years) and as they wear their hydroplaning resistance becomes even worse. The tread pattern is pretty poor for evacuating water on the BFGs and that's the main reason I don't like them on a DD. My Nittos are a much better handling tire around town and they rock off road too so I don't see how the premium you pay for the BFGs is worth it but everybody has different opinions and it's whatever makes you happy.

I doubt I'd see 60k from my Nittos but I will take the better wet/dry handling over 10-15k more miles plus it would take me 5 years+ to hit 50k on this set.

 

Get a cheap online price and then get locals to price match. I got (5) 37/12.50/15 MT/Rs for under $1K this way.

 

I don't think I'll go with 265/75's because they will hurt my gas mileage. I love my 21 mpg and would hate to have to kiss it goodbye. Also, I will look into those Nitto's. I had BFG's on my old truck and really liked them so I dunno if I will change my mind.

How are Nitto's for road noise?

I gotta go with you on this one...I'm looking for a good winter tire for the stock rims I will be running next winter. I like the looks/price/reviews of the Nitto's but they don't list a 265/R70 only the 75.

I'm back planning on the Revo's now unless anyone has any suggestions on alternative tire sizes. Look's like we could go wider but since these are for the winter for me I don't really want to do that...that gets us back to the gas mileage loss.

 

How much would one size wider hurt mileage? I priced revos for my truck - $800. OTD @ Discount, so now I'm considering the Nittos

 

REVO's have a $75 discount till May 6th, i'll be getting my set for around $700 now.

 

Nittos can easily be had for under $600 installed;I went all out through Discount Tire and got the replacement certificates and still made it out under $680 plus it's nice to have the rotations done by somebody else in 10 minutes.
