I took my truck to a friend of a friend to have the valves adjusted..while watching him, I noticed that there were several large deposits of black gunk on the exhaust side of the head (underneath the valve cover).

He said that "she's been hot on some bad oil" and not to touch the stuff because to do so would only free it up to get into the oil pump, etc.

Should I do something about this, or should I wait until the truck is upside down to take off the valve cover and scape it out? It seems to me that the gunk will slowly break up and get into trouble on its own anyway..
