I have a question for the masters out there. When i come to a stop some times in the new truck i just picked up (97 taco, auto tranny, 6 inch lift, 33s) i notice that it will shutter in the last seconds before i stop, almost like somethings loose or something. I narrowed it donw to a tranny issue because when i stop in neutral, it does not do it.

Like i said it only happens sometimes, but i paid 8500 for the truck so im tripping out. 105K miles. Any help?

 

it may not be the tranny. It could be any part of the drivetrain. Putting it in neutral takes the load off of everything behind the engine. Tranny, Transfer, Driveshaft, Rear Axle. I had a low hum in mine that I could have swore was something toward the front of the truck. Then I blew out the rear diff and the noise went away.
Check your Zerks and fluids.

Edit: Mine feels like my rear axle is moving forward after the rest of the rig has stopped and it bumps. I've gotten under the rig and tried wiggling the drive line and it was SOLID. I thought about asking to wiggle the rear axle when it was on the lift last oil change, but it looked a little precarious up there, so I didn't want to risk it falling on me

I've been thinking about watching as my fiance drives by and stops to see if anything is noticeable. Maybe when the day time highs are actually above 12 deg F

Ditto, could be the driveshaft sticking or a u-joint on the way out (among other things).

 

This is normal from what I understand, its called axle-hop. From what I have read, anytime the leafsprings are above the axle, this will happen with hard or even semi hard stops.

 

Right, at first i was thinking axel wrap, but i though that was only when your taking off from a stop, not coming to one. But it is infrequent, thats what gets me. it will do it like 5-6 stops in a row, then go away, then come back. I have had a few trucks lifted with blocks before and i havent got this, so i am really hoping its not serious.

I must admidt, i am kind of a newbie when it comes to the termonolgy, are you talking about the differential fluid, or the tranny? And what are the zerks? Sorry, i know i probably sound stupid, but im just a dumb dirtbike rider at this point, but a fairly good basic mechanic.

 

My T4R has a "bump" when i ALMOST come to a complete stop and then take my foot of the brake. There is a thread somewhere about this being fixed it by greasing the drive shaft and slip yoke.

 

Thats what mine did last week. Search CLUNK and you will find info there. I got a grease gun and greased all the zerks fittings(8) especially the slip yoke grease that one up good. My clunk went away. Very easy to do.

 

I would check the rear diff fluid. While you're back there I would pull both brake drums and look for signs of leaking oil. These years have a habbit of leaking into the rear drums. When I bought mine I took it in to Toyota and had a transmission flush done (not a fluid change but a full flush). The zerk/grease fittings are the little grease nipples.. mmmmmm grease nipples

If you want... have all of your fluids replaced with synthetics. I have Mobil 1 in my engine, but regular oil in the trans. I would get a synthetic grease for you grease nipples though as it's pretty cheap.

OK, it sounds like exactly what you guys are talking about, just as i begin to take my foot off the brake while stapping,

so what exactly is the SLIP YOKE, part of the drive shaft right, can anyone direct me to a pic, or have one handy. i know this seems pretty lame, but you guys are really helping me out, i cant wait to grease it up and see if it stops. Any particular type of grease? Thanks, Steve

There has been a past thread describing similar symptoms. The solution was to grease the drive shaft splines.
