94 toyota pickup. I'm hearing a clicking noise from my left wheel when i turn. Can anybody give me a diagnosis and solution to fix? Thanks!

 

Could be a CV joint or Wheel bearing.

 

how 'bout some specs. lifted? SAS? tire size, only when 4WD engaged, all the time, etc. did you check your CVs?

 

I was thinking it might be my cv joint, it just started occuring. I hear it every time i turn. My truck is basically stock.

If it is the cv joint, what do i need to do to fix it?

 

pull out the old axle, put in a new one, and drive off.

edit: sorry, that probably sounds flippant. it's actually an easy fix with the right equipment. reman axles are under $100 with core return.

what kind of clicking sound is it? I have a sort a clicking sound myself at full lock and its just the tire rubbing on a trim piece thats worked loose.

 

I have a sort of almost knocking/clicking type sound that I hear when I turn the wheel left under certain types of articulation. Anyone know what that is? It's definately coming from the front suspension. Also, usually only happens when I'm at or near full lock (at the steering stops). Almost sounds like it's "catching" the steering stops instead of rubbing them and making that crappy sound like it normally does. Thought it might be the plastic fender trim but I know my stuff is tucked in tight and bolted down and it doesn't sound like plastic anyways.

 

does it sound like a nasty metal grinding sound? i get that when i turn the wheel all the way to the end on my 94 pu, and its worst when it hits a bump.

 

if there is grease all around the CV boot, you gotta cv boot leak. theres a lot

My 2nd gen 4Runner/Truck makes a loud popping/grinding noise when I make a sharp turn. What is this noise?

Don't worry, most of the time this noise is just the steering stops rubbing on each other. Normally there is a plastic cap covering the metal preventing this noise.
However, these quickly wear away and fall off. You can get replacement caps for a couple bucks at the dealer, but most people just grease the metal stops, or live with it.

 

No, I know what the steering stop noise is. I've heard that before, sounds like a very erry sort of rubbing sound. Mine sounds almost like the steering stops are "catching" and you hear it catch, then let go, catch then let go. And the catching and letting go is the sound I described above. I'm wondering if this is related to the fact that I think I might need new tie rods at some point in the near future, which I"m gonna have looked at in April (they're not that bad right now, but I want to get it looked at to make sure).

 

i'm pretty sure my problem is the cv joints....

 

There is also a brass washer type thing that the cv shaft passes through into the spindle. These have a habit of drying up and rubbing making a squeak

 

my 83 just started doing the same thing and was wondering what it was?? i was thinking axles or my diff not sure but not a nice sound? i find it does it when im turning left as well and if i break the tires loose turning either direction it jumps around and sounds horrible! any input on what u find let me know...

 

im with quakefire check the bushing that the axle passes thru the knuckle it can allow the axle to wallow around in there and make noise if its cheesed

If you have auto hubs the cv axles might be engaged and turning all the time..causing them to wear and turn when the truck is moving. New CVs and some manual hubs to think about

 

tore my third out today and found that the welds had broke and sheered a few teeth off the spider gears! i drove like that for a couple weeks and took it wheelin thats a toyota for ya! i am gunna beast weld that third got a new one in today so just gunna weld the s out of the old one cuz the ring and pinion are fine!

 

pre heat it first and i know its ugly but a 6011 rod penetrates good and deep with minor prep
