New Rear axle vs gear work: Opinions

Hey guys,
I have some vibration coming from my rear diff, not sure what exactly is causing but my mechanic friend said that diffs are rarely as good as new when they have been opened up.

Do you guys recomend having the diff worked on or just getting a whole new rear axle from a junkyard? My rear brakes are fine but it would be kinda nice to get all new stuff....

Since you did not describe your troubleshooting steps, what makes you think it is coming from your rear diff? If it's a vibration from the rear it may be something as "simple" as a bad u-joint on the driveshaft. Start with the basics and work your way up from there. An axle swap is a pretty drastic step to cure a vibration. And if you pull an axle housing/diff from a junkyard, what makes you think everything will be perfect with that without cracking it open?

I took it to a trusted mechanic who said it was rear diff. I thought it sounded like it was coming from the front so I replaced the CVs. Improved vibration some but it also made it also made it apparent there was some vib coming the rear. I also dropped the driveshaft and that made some difference but didn't fix it either. I guess it is traveling through the suspension. I have brand new tires that were mounted and balenced with the Roadforce balancer.

I just don't know what would be the smartest thing to do. I could change out a complete rear axle myself but the diff or bearings, I don't know if I am comfortable with or have the tools. I could probably get the tools from a friend though. Thanks for the input!

IMO its very unlikely to be the diff. If you know your tires are NOT causing it (its usally simple to tell diff. between tire vibration and drivetrain vibration) then go to the driveshaft/u-joints first.

How did you "drop" the driveshaft to rule it out. Did you drop the front? What makes your mechanic think its the R.Diff? BTW if you do change anything you might as well regear that sumbitch to 4.56 and go 33"
