More 4runner purchase advice
Hello again,
I am still looking for a good 4runner. Is it just me or are these things hard to come by? At least they seem to be in my neck of the woods. Anyway, I wanted to run by all you experts the latest 4runner I have come across and see what you all think it might be worth.
It is an 87 SR5 4 cylinder with automatic, for sale by the original owner who bought it new in Dec of 86. The auto with the 4cyl bothers me a bit because of what everyone says about the power loss. It has 233k on it and has had the timing belt replaced twice at the 100k intervals. I have just briefly seen it and am going to take a closer look tommorrow. The exterior is red and looks great and has new tires. It looks really clean like they have really taken care of it.
That's about all the info I have on it now, please let me know what you think a specimen like this might we worth in Tennessee.
Thanks!
Chris

i dont like autos at all. i know what you are going through. i looked for like 8 months then i found what i got now. ended up getting a second gen. too clean to pass up. i test drove an auto turbo 4runner. 86 with only 174000 on it. couldnt get out of its own way. could barely make it over an over pass. it stugled. thats my only experience with an auto. but it doesnt hurt to test drive it.

I know people always rip the auto but I do not mind mind it at all, it struggles when trying to accellerate from 70+ up a hill but other than that it's fine. Afterall these arent really made for that anyway. But this is my experience with my 3.0....

being a novice offroader, i would rather have an auto just because i dont need more things to worry about. a skilled manual driver is needed to be successful when offroad. i would like a manual some day, but i definitely like having my 3.0 with an auto. however, if it were a 4banger, i would not be getting an auto, get the manual. you would hate the power.

I have an auto with the 3.0. What do you plan on using the vehicle for? I don't really do any true wheeling, just camping, fishing, daily driver...so the auto doesn't bother me too much.
That being said I still wish I had a manual for the following reasons: 1) fuel mileage, the manual will get better mpg 2) servicing, a manual is cheaper and easier to do yourself.
I couldn't pass up the condition of the automatic I found at the price I found so I bought it. By and large I don't mind it.
