rear differential and axle problems

1994 Toyota pickup ext cab v6 4x4 . My differential and axles do not engage smoothly. As i spin the rear wheels freelly the driveshaft does not spin with the tire and engagement is not instant. Takes about a 1/4 turn of the shaft till the axles engage and then the wheels spin. My rear wheels will chatter as i accelerate thru a turn. Need a diagnosis and fix of problem!? Need help!? Thanks!

Check out this thread...does it answer your question?

A slight delay in engagement of 4w by the transfer case is normal I believe. As far as the chatter in a curve...the front wheels are binding with the rear. This usually happens on dry pavement. Is this what you are experiencing? .

OK...do you have a "locking" differential in the rear?

As you rock a wheel back and forth, there will be some slop, that's normal. How much slop is the question. 1/4 turn sounds like a lot.
Hard to say about rear wheels chatter accellerating in a turn. Do you mean you hear and feel grinding noises from the rear axle, do you mean the inside wheel hops or spins...?
Wild Guess is you need to have it checked. Could be the pinion nut just needs tightened or could be more serious.

sounds exactly like my rear diff....could be that you have aftermarket gears and a locker. Jack the rear axle off the ground and start rotating one of the tires forward if the other goes in the same directon then its not open

I'm with flamed - sounds like way too much backlash or other pinion adjustment. I would guess the jerking in corners is you "bouncing" off both cuts of the gear. You'll need a pro to check it out and readjust.

Would be a good opportunity to regear for larger tires and put in a good locker.... LOL (yotatech helpin' ya spend those hard saved dollars!)

when i spin the wheel there is a clicking sound that i can hear coming from the differential when it does not engage. When i accelerate through a turn, what i think is that when i accelerate the differential and axles will grab, then slips out, grabs, and slips out and so forth. Getting the tire chatter sensation.

Wow, that sounds exactly like what a "lunchbox" locker would do...need to do what SilverTruck said.

1994 toyota 4x4 rear end problems

I have two issues with my 1994 Toyota 4 cylinder 4x4 truck.
1. Sometimes when I am at a dead stop and have it in 1st gear and start to let the clutch out it sometimes takes several seconds for the rear wheels to engage. As I let the clutch out the engine just revs and then after a couple seconds the rear wheels will engage in an abrupt manner. This is the only time this happens. When I shift to other gears I have no problem with the transmission or power to the rear wheels.
2. Sometimes when I am rolling to a stop I push the clutch in and shift to neutral. As I am almost stopped it fees as if the rear end to lock up slightly which seems to cause the wheels to skid a little bit.
Any ideas?
