using factory fog light wires in my 01

i have a few questions.. ive searched but didnt find exact answers.

1) what is the exact wattage of 01 factory fogs? I believe its 55W?

2) can i tap into the power and ground wires to wire up hella 500 fogs? my plan is to use splice connectors to tap in.

3) what is the functionality of stock fogs? do they come on with the headlights?

thanks!

I can answer a few question. I have factory fogs in my '01, and unless you do the DRL, and Fog mods, they will only come on with the headlights. Mine don;t seem to have very much output, they are on, but never noticeable, I am not sure in the way of voltage though.

only w/ my DL on can i turn on the fogs, at the stem. and they go off w/ high beams on.
if you are adding significantly higher wattage lamps i would consider using the volatage supply to the fogs to operate a relay to the hellas, which are operated through a dedicated power source across the relay.

1. 55W is correct. Same for Hella 500's. Wire them up direct.

2. simply wire them in at the end where the factory fogs would have gone.

3. they only come on when you have the headlights on and then you turn on the fogs w/ the switch. do the "fog light mod" in the tech section and then you can turn the fogs on w/ the parking lights, and do NOT shut off when you flip to brights.

Personally I would use the factory wiring to activate a relay for the 550's. I would then set a separate fuse block to take to power for the lamps. This would allow the use of higher wattage bulbs, according to the gauge of the power wire. It will also take the stress off of the factory wiring. Sort of like the headlight mod.

splice into the oem wire w/ those crimps, then coat them w/ about 20 layers of electrical tape to keep them dry and you'll be fine. 55W is a low draw. if you ever go above that, then do another relay.

you don't want to do a 100W h3 bulb in those hellas or they'll overheat and as soon as water or snow hit them, then the glass will crack. stick w/ 55W h3 bulbs or get different lights.
