Hello,
I have 97 4 runner with130k miles and when i try to start it nothing happens no click to the starter nothing at all , the lights on the dash do go on. the secound time i try she fire right up- i cleaned the batt connections. i was woundering about the ignition swithch or start relay ??? can thes be cleaned ther both about $100 per part.

Could be the starter contacts, seems to be common on Toyota's. Read throught this site, good news is the contacts are cheap.

I have been having a similar problem and think that it is the starter contacts just haven't gotten around to changing them out

 

The wifes '99 was just doing the same thing. New starter contacts and plunger solved the problem. Read the above tech link, pulling the starter is a bear if you have an auto, the link will tell you what to expect.
