Synthetic oil significantly reduced valve ticking in my engine

Couldn't believe it, still can't, but I'm very happy. Valve ticking in my 22R-E was driving me crazy. I adjusted it 3 times. Each adjustment was progressively better, especially with 0.007 and 0.011 while cold. I needed to do an oil change after about 1000 miles, because the front end was recently replaced with a new timing cover, water pump, oil pump, FIPG and dino oil ...

The PO used only synthetic oil, as evidenced by all his receipts, and I thought I'd try using synthetic also. I was amazed with how quiet the engine was after replacing the dino with synthetic.

This worked for me, and I'm not claiming that it will help reduce valve ticking with your engine.

My 3.0 burns oil, so I don't want to use synthetic in it. I'll wind up paying too much $$$ just topping it off every week. My understanding with the ticking in a 3.0, is that it's mostly from the injectors, not the valves.

I'm with Troy. Sounds more like injectors than valves in my 3.0.

Very similar sound - recommend getting a mechanics stethoscope - they're cheap and very helpful in tracking down the source of all kinds of engine noises. They have a long thin metal rod that you place against whatever you want to listen to. Just be real careful not to get the stethoscope or any body parts caught up in any moving engine parts.

Ticking on my 3vze drove me nuts. I checked the gasket around the steering column where it goes through the firewall and found it had cracked. It was hard to see, but made a huuge difference when replaced. I also re shimmed my valves. I went on the tight end of the specs which shouldn't be a problem as long as I check them again after a reasonable amount of time. My truck is so quiet now. Didn't do anything to the injectors. yes, I can hear them with the hood up, but not from inside the cab. I know re shimming is a pain, but don't overlook this.
