i paid 4200 for an 89 with an automatic and the 22re and I am happy, take it to a mechanic for a once over and pay the man if it passes within reason. I assume it's a 4x4, if not, the price is still good. SR5?

22R and 22R-E are exactly the same engine mechanically. the difference lies in the induction -- the 22R is carbureted, while the 22R-E has multiport fuel injection.

The EFI 22RE was used in trucks beginning in 1985. It uses the same crank and rods as a pre-1985 22R but has dome top pistons, a taller deck height on the block and a shorter deck height on the head. As a result, the oil pump, timing cover and timing set are also different.

There was an EFI 22RE made from 83-84 that was used in Celicas. That one has an identical lower end as the 22R with a different head.

Unfortunately, I found all this out the hard way. I ended up with a 83-84 22RE that I can't really use.
