Gentlemen:I looked at a 98 and a 99 4Runner at two dealers this weekend.Both are in excellent condition appearance wise.Both places were closed so I didn't drive them.They both have about 90,000 miles on them.The Toyota dealer is asking $12,000 for the 98.A small independent dealer is asking $11,000 for the 99.Is there anything I should be aware when I test drive them and negotiate the final price?Do you think the prices are too high?I have a 90 with 188,000 miles on it but is now beginning to rust out.Should I sell or trade it?I never bought a used vehicle before...Thanks

 

Both prices seem fairly high, but I would go with the 99. They updated the interior in 1999.

I got my 1999 Toyota 4Runner 4x4 for 10,500$ with 73k miles.

too high! reference nada and kbb (private and dealer). also, look in the classifieds in your area. maybe 4runners in your area are hard to find

Hey, I just bought a 99 sport for $8500.00 , but it has a few issues

 

I gave $14,500 plus tax, tag, and such for my '00 SR5 w/86,000 miles. The dealer came down to $11,100 then I had the payoff of what I was trading in, my Ford Explorer. I know it seems a little high but the ford was starting to act up and it only had 71,000 miles on it. No more Fords for me, Toyota all the way! I would keep what you have because they aren't gonna give much on a trade in. Usually you can do a better deal without a trade-in.

 

Absolutely check kbb.com and other local prices. Those prices you quoted do sound high. If that's what they're asking, then they SHOULD be willing to come down.

Ask for any maintenance records/history for the vehicles. At 90,000 miles they would be due for timing belt replacement (if not previously done) amongst other preventive maintenance work. I would offer in the $9k range and then work lower from there based on anything else the vehicle needs (i.e., timing belt, fluid changes, tires, brakes, alignment, etc..). Often the dealer will perform the maintenance work for free to close the deal.

At 90,000 miles, they're both just broken-in providing the previous owners took reasonable care of them.
