I remember reading something about a fuel delivery "problem" that Toyota fixed in '99
Is that true and what exactly was the problem?

 

it was fixed in the 97+ tacomas to utilize the s/c

even tho that fix wasnt right either!

 

Denso injectors changed to their new style.

 

Thus the 97+ supercharger kit only....cause the "ecu" cant handle it for the 95-96's...

 

so can a 98 4Runner injectors handle a SC

 

they used that as an excuse that they can....no...they still lean out no 5vz stock system can handle the s/c right off the bat like they SHOULD.

 

So what did you do to allow your 96 to handle the S/C?

 

doesnt have stock injectors and the stock ecu is assisted by a piggyback like everyone else.
There is NO difference between the years besides a MINOR upgrade to the injectors and the ecu was adjusted to go along with it.
Still everyone has to upgrade the injectors and get a piggyback to control them

 

Thanks. So the 'minor' injector upgrade was only because of the added supercharger?? I'm almost 100% positive that i remember reading a thread where someone mentioned the fuel injector change was made because of a prolonged problem with pre '99 3.4s which contributed to some type of engine trouble/failure.

 

As mentioned as well tho that it all came around the same time denso changed there line of injectors

 

The pre 99 and 99 and later stock injectors have the same flow capacity.

The newer injectors are no longer Denso and are completely injected molded plastic, most likely a cost cutting measure.

The folks in Japan have not done anything to the fuel system or ECU calibration to make it better for TRD's aftermarket supercharger.

the 95-96 tacomas did not have the same... i got mine flow tested at 230 and a 2001s came in at 248.
The guys at toyota here (TRD "reps") mentioned same thing that 97+ there were slightly larger injectors due to there change over or what not and of course the ecu was calibrated to reflect that. They also used that as an excuse why you couldnt use the s/c on 95-96 model TACOMAS (not 4runners).

Of course like all toyota dealers its kinda sketchy info but these guys are pritty good.
