Bump stops: How to remove?

Dumb question of the day. I am trying to remove the stock front bumpstops on my '96, the 4 on the lower a-arms. The only way I can see getting them unthreaded is with a crescent or pipe wrench that opens up to 3" to get around the octagonal plates underneath the rubber stops. I don't have a wrench that will open that wide, and I thought I would ask on here if anybody has any better ideas before I go out and buy a wrench for one job (although I suppose a pipe wrench will always come in handy at some point). Thanks in advance. - Duncan
