Won't start, no CEL. Bad ECU or connection?

Sometimes the truck will start sometimes it won't. I noticed that when it wont start the CEL will not light up when the key is on. IF it does light up, truck will start fine. Could it be an ECU going out or a bad connection? Anyone have this problem before?

When it doesn't start, do any of the dash lights come on? Does the engine crank but not catch or does the engine not crank at all?

well i've got two seperate issues:

1) you get in, turn the key to start, and get nothing (starter contacts).
2) you get in, turn the key to start, and it just cranks and cranks.... thats the issue we are working on. When you have the key on, the seatbelt, and brake lights are on (maybe one more, but i cant remember off the top of my head). Now: sometimes the CEL is on, sometimes it isnt. When it is, it starts no problem (less than 1 second of cranking to start), when its not on, you can crank it all day and get nothing.

WEll the truck did have a remote start.... I ripped part of it out, but not all of it. IT could be possible that it is causing my problem, but I cant see how it would prevent the CEL from coming on.

87 22RE runner.... hasnt done it in a while, im a little stumped. IF yours is doing it as well, that would probably negate my idea that it has to do with the remote start components, unless your truck is equipped with that.
