SC Oil Change

I’ve done a lot of work on my 4Runner this past week and I wanted to share some info to save someone else some footwork. This may be old news to some.

The TRD 3.4L SC provides a fill plug, but no drain plug. There is no level indication on the SC, so if you wanted to check the level, you can’t even do that. (The fill plug level is not the proper level.)

Magnuson (OEM) says you have to pull the SC off and drain the SC out the fill hole. (Apparently you cannot suction out all the oil.) Then you have to fill the SC with the correct amount of oil

Because I was replacing my fuel injectors this was the opportune time to change the SC oil. In preparation I was trying to find out where to buy the oil and how much. Gadget had responded to my inquiry saying that the 1st gen SC (two-piece) had a 150 ml capacity. I have the 2nd gen SC. He also said GM SC oil was the same thing.

I went to the local Toyota dealer. No one seemed to know the correct amount. They had just one fill kit left for $40 (with an injection pump). I think the bottle was 50 ml – I just remembered it couldn’t be enough. $40 … the counter guy just kinda sheepishly grinned when he told me the price. Instead I went to the local GM dealer and bought a 118 ml bottle of SC oil for $9.

After repeated phone calls (at least 5) I finally got Magnuson to tell me the capacity was 130 ml. I even submitted this question to TRD and eventually got a response of 120 ml.

I when I drained my SC I got about 100 ml. I ended up just emptying the GM oil bottle (118 ml) into the SC. I figured it was more than what I drained out and left it at that.

If you have any additional info I, for one, would be interested in it. Thanks.

1 fluid ounce = 29.5735297 ml, so 118ml is right on.
