Help me out on 1st Gen SR5 on ebay
I'm not interested in buying it, just was curious about this vehicle being an SR5 and some misconceptions I have about the SR5 trim level.
1) So you could get an 88 or 89 4Runner SR5 with the 22RE?
2) This vehicle has no tachometer, again I thought this would have been standard on the SR5
What did the SR5 give you then? I assumed it meant standard options for the 1st Gen, such as: power windows, locks, antenna, full gauges including tach

More power and refinement arrive in a 3.0-liter V6 engine, with a front grill badge. Turbocharged EFI 22R 4-cylinder dropped. Side mirror shape becomes larger, more square. First year for rear split fold seats. Small vents windows on doors go away.
my 87 had split folding rear seats... and my 88 still has the vent windows

Should post a link to the auction, I could tell you more from looking at pics.
Yes, the tach was standard on the SR5. The V6 was an option on the SR5. Power everything was an option. Moonroof was an option. (Power windows deleted the wing windows.) Split folding rear seat was standard starting with 1984... Tall center console was standard. Stereo with EQ (originally cassette but later CD) was an option. Chrome was an option. SR5 stripes were standard. Rear step-type bumper was standard. Carpet was standard, and under it was premium sound insulation. Fabric on door panels rather than vinyl was standard.
As for errors in that 4Runner history, here's what I see.
1. Starting with 1984 there were 3 models not 2. Standard, Deluxe, SR5
2. The Standard was available with no rear seat at all, but the Standard was available with the rear seat. They did this to import them as trucks and save on tarriffs. The vast majority of the bare ones got "port-installed" interior "kits" prior to going to the dealerships - these are the ones you see with a once-piece (not split) rear seat. Once sales took off, they discontinued this practice. I never saw another one after '85. (They were called "conversions" at the dealership.)
3. There were a lot of 1984 SR5s (both 4Runners and pickups) with the 22RE. Not all though.
4. (1987) As noted above there was Never an SR5 without the rear seat and interior.
5. For 1987 the headlights did not become more rounded, they were still the same 6x7 rectangular sealed beams.
6. (1987) The body mounted bumper was the standard bumper on all years and did not start in 87. The step bumper was frame mounted, also on all years and did not start in 87.
7. (1988) Was not the first year of the split rear seat, that started in 84. Vent windows did not end in 88 either.
I can't remember for certain what year the power mirrors and door locks became part of the power package. I think it was '86 for mirrors and a few years later for door locks.

Having an 84 SR5, I can tell you a few things firsthand about mine:
-Has full guage cluster with tach
-has altimiter/clinometer
-split folding rear seats
-power windows (no pwr locks)
-originally had step rear bumper
-chrome grill, bumpers, door handles
-5 speed (as the SR5 should be!)
-22R carb'd 4cyl (22R-E was not available in 4Runner until 85;it was available in some celicas in 84 however)
-A/C
-No cruise control
-Rear deck light

Extra $ Options: Moonroof, A/C, Power Package (pwr windows, intermittent wipers, cruise control,) Chrome package (wheelwell moldings, grill, bumpers,) Stereo Cassette w/ EQ and amplified rear speakers, 8-way Seats (driver side was 8way, pass not as good) Gold Pearl Clearcoat paint ($509 extra)

Incidently I had an '85 SR5 shortbed 4x4 equipped the same way (except 4Runner specific stuff)-
Standard on SR5: 22RE, gauges with tach, tilt column, tinted glass, SR5 fabric interior, chrome wheels, SR5 stripes, rear step bumper (Fey heavy duty)
Extra $ Options: Moonroof, A/C, Power Package (pwr windows, intermittent wipers, cruise control,) Chrome package (wheelwell moldings, grill, bumpers,) Stereo Cassette w/ EQ and 5 speakers incl subwoofer, 8-way Seats (driver side was 8way, pass not as good) Black Clearcoat paint ($509 extra) (Note that black was a special color until '86 when it became a standard color and no longer clearcoated)
Sticker was $14,900
Body side impact moldings did not come from Toyota but were dealer installed (at extra cost) Actually, I don't think any came from the factory with A/C either, the dealer ordered the A/C kits separately (from Toyota) and installed them.
I bought both of those new, saved the window stickers, but I gave them to the people I sold them to...

From the pic it doesn't look like it has a tach, but I believe I see an SR5 badge on the back. Yes I'm aware they could swap gauges or swap badges. I've never seen an 88 or 89 SR5 that wasn't a V6, but I see from one of the earlier links that they do in fact exist.

Im going to go out on a limb and say this might not be an SR5...
This is due to the lack of a clinometer (or mounting holes for it), the center console without the rear heater, the basic speedo guage cluster, and the lack of power windows. It also looks like there were no rear pockets by the back seats. Im not positive, but i think non SR5 models came without these.
The things that do make it look SR5 are the wheels (I think those are toyota?), the badge, and the stripes.

I've always liked how mixed up some Toyota descriptions get... alot of comapnies don't even calim that 89 was a Gen1, there are Wing Windows on my 89, and that thaing you're talking about is NO SR5...

As for me, I'm not historian as such, I was actually there back in the day and have owned a bunch of them - all bought new! (Yes, I'm an old fart...) I was a SERIOUS Yota fan in the 70s and 80s and so was my father, and he sold Toyotas..
My interest sort of died after the 1990 models came out and I quit keeping tuned in to every option and spec.
I'm still trying to get dad to find those 1980's Toyota dealer books - he swears he still has them somewhere...
