I have two noises that are driving me crazy. One I know is coming fron the power steering pump. It whines when you turn the wheel and when it's cold. Belts are tight and fluid level is fine.
Is it pump replacement time for me, and if so, do you have to get the steering pump with the reservior or just the pump mehanism,then attach old reservior.

Also...does anyone know what might be causing the metal vibrating sound when I push on the accelerator. It sounds like part of the exhaust vibrating up in the engine compartment. I've checked all hangers and everthing up into the engine compartment.

 

I have the same problem with the apparent exhaust vibration. I have looked under the truck while it is at idle and know that part of the problem is comming from the cat (a little retaining type clip).

The exhaust vibration is so annoying that I hate to drive the truck on the interstate. Around 65-75 mph is terrible. Hope someone out there knows the solution.

Thanks for the reply, fortunately my problem is when I just start out when you intially push down on the gas pedal. It sounds like a thin piece of metal vibrating and goes away after the intial push down on the pedal.........has anybody had this problem and been able to isolate it?????????

 

The p/s pump whine might be caused by the wrong fluid in it. I believe toyota us dexron atf in the pump from the factory. The p/s fluid you buy at an auto parts store tends to be thicker and doesn't flow as well which can cause it to whine. My fist thing to try would be a drain and refil of the p/s fluid w/dexron. On the exhaust noise is the vehicle a v6 or 4cyl? That might help in the diagnosis.

Check your exhaust hangers. I had the exact same noise. Turns out it was 2 torn hangers!

My 4runner is a v6...and I'm using dexron fluid in my p/s pump.

I was at the dealer yesterday and they said the bearing in the pump is definately bad. So now the question is, how difficult is it to change out this pump???????

 

my power steering pump makes the same noise, but when i turn the wheel it goes away? i also had that same rattle, it turned out the little "skid plate" on the converter was loose, so i ripped it off.
