Very hard shifting when cold?
Got a problem with my 91 2wd pickup when first started in the morning. It doesn't want to shift into 2nd when cold, sometimes it even grinds pretty bad. 3rd gear is a little stiff but better but also occasionally will grind too. The tranny fluid was changed last year when the shifter bushing was changed. Toyota did it. I'm thinking maybe if I change the fluid to a redline product it will smooth it out, good idea and which kind do i need? thanks

Mine is rough when it's cold too but I've learned how to make it work. About a second hesitation between 1st and 2nd and 1/2 second between 2nd and 3rd makes it glide in pretty smooth. If I'm down shifting to 2nd I usually tap the gas and it goes in smoother. Never thought too much of it as all of my vehicles have been harder to shift when they are cold.

I initially changed over to Amsoil when I bought my truck and didn't like the shifting. I then went to Redline, and it was much better than the original dino oil and Amsoil. It's worth a try, but I wouldn't expect much. You might want to try the "overfill" method too. There are a few posts on it here. I have mine overfilled just a bit too. Have had no problems.

GL5 oil in our trannies tends to make them hard to shift. redline MT90 is a GL4 oil, which is what works best for toyota transmissions. i also noticed in the new amsoil catalog that they came out with their own synthetic GL4 transmission oil.

Redline MT-90
Mine held 3 quarts-that just barely did overfill it. If I had ordered 4 quarts, I might have added just a bit more. I don't know how much yours would hold. I would think 3 would be enough, but I really don't know.
