Taco Tailgate weather-proofing

I've been mulling the best way to weather seal my tailgate to improve my camping setup. Anyone have incite as to the best method?

I'm thinking about using 3/4" thick door and window weather-proofing foam tape. Would an older gen 4runner with the tailgate be somewhat similar that I could rob gaskets? Winter may be a potential problem as I do a lot of winter camping and I dont want frozen moisture to ruin the seals. Ideas are greatly appreciated even if you haven't done this.
