BJ Spacer causing slight rubbing, 31's on stock 15x7's

Just wanted to give a heads up to anyone running BJ spacers with stock wheels, you may get some slight rubbing. It's hard to tell in the pics but there is a worn area to the paint on the control arm and on the tire. The tires are 31x10.50's. The rubbing is minor, probably only occurring during hard cornering as the sidewall flexes. A 1/4" spacer should cure this.

Yep, that can happen on stock wheels with smaller tires. It's generally dependent on where that particular tire bulges when inflated. A small spacer or trimming of the a-arm can remedy that. Since larger tires bulge out farther away from the a-arm they typically clear.

So you're saying that a 32x11.50 would clear on stock alloys? My plan is to run 33x10.50's in the future, I also just added 1.25" spacers so I definately clear now.

I'm not ripping on the spacers, they're the best mod I've added, especially for the price. I just wanted to let everyone know if you like to keep your stock alloys that it could happen.

It's all good. I just wanted you to know you are not alone as that problem has popped up before and hopefully offer some helpful suggestions.

I really should gather up all the posts and put that information in one spot so one can see which tires work and which have issues. I've been busy and I never seem to get to doing it.

33X10.5's should not have a problem. People cleare 'em fine with 33X12.5's.

yea, they said that on the SDORI website when they advertised. they said will stock wheels, you could run into minor rubbing, but i wouldnt worry about it. i upgraded to different wheels with different backspacing. that may be an option for you too.

Not when I purchased mine though bro'. Note my signature has the old SDORS acronym not SDORI

I'm running spacers as I posted, so aftermarket wheels aren't needed.

They're the same as far as I know. I was saying that there weren't any warnings back when I bought them on the website.

I see you have 3rd Gen wheels Todd. Is there any chance that the 3rd Gen wheels have an ever so slightly different backspacing (as in more)? From the pics of your rig, they appear to be tucked in quite a bit (more than I remember when I had my stock SR5 split spokes) Might just be the pics though...

That could be a possibility Mike, I'll have to check into the backspacing. The wheels came from a Taco, they're 15x7.

As far as them looking so tucked in, that's probably because they're just puny 31x10.50's. The boss won't let me get new tires until these are worn. Damn things won't wear out though! They have around 35k miles on 'em but still alot of tread.

Let us know what you find out, because I've gone back to my 2nd Gen SR5 alloys after having MT Classic II's. My BJ Spacers will go on once I have my 'new' engine in. I'd rather not run any wheel spacer if I can help it...

My stock alloys are supposed to have 4.5" backspacing, I searched the web to find this out.

I just found this info on 4crawler's website:

Tires on rims with the stock backspacing of 4.5" might have rubbing issues.
This is dependent on tire geometry, most clear but a few don't.
This can be often be remedied by filing/trimming the end of the a-arm lip and/or using rim spacers. Rims with less than 4.5" of backspacing clear all tires known so far.
A 1/4" wheel spacer is also an option for fitting stock wheels with clearance issues.

Sounds like it's "hit or miss" depending on the actual tire.

There was a long thread on this quite a while back. I'll have to dig in and see what tires work with what.

A little SDORI trivia, we were San Diego Off Road Solutions when we started. However, since we and Off Road Solutions serve the same market in similar ways we changed our name so as not to infringe on ORS or confuse our customers. The products and all are the same, just the name changed.

How wide? I'm planning 35 x 12.5BFG Muds on beadlocked SR5 alloys. I was hoping to use no spacer...

15x7, the exact same ones you beadlocked. yours are 3/4" wider? theoretically, you should have 3/8" more UCA clearance then. if you shave the UCA as well, i bet you can clear it.

Thanks!! Yep, 3/4" to an 1" wider, but all on the outside so the BS would still be the same. I'm hoping this lessens the tire bulge a bit also in the UCA area. I have no qualms about shaving the UCA's too if needed.

Oh, by how wide, I meant the spacer thickness. How thick is what I should have asked.. (?)

I have 33x10.50R15 tires on stock 7x15" wheels (offset +8) and BJ spacers. Not even close to have any rubbing problems...
