my truck is a 4x2 with a 22r

i have heard that an old supra tranny will bolt right in if i change the bellhousing with mine. is there validity to this?

if yes, what years will fit? and what tranny? i have heard that its a w58, but none of the places i seem to contact know about a w58, they only know what tranny a vehicle came out of....

i beleive i am looking for a late 80s, manual, without abs for a 7mge which is the non turbo is this accurate?

 

I can see it being possible. I don't know of any info on the older trannies, I remember that the older supras, and celicas had 22r's in them, so i don't see why it wouldn't be possible. Unless they were FWD but I don't think they were.

BTW-I have heard rumors of this tranny swap but never actually had that confirmed either... I wanna know too.

 

So you're tranny pooped out on you.... what kind of prices are you finding for rebuilds and junkyard finds? Should be quite a few out there no? Any chance of rebuilding it yourself or are you not comfortable enough with the process? (I don't think I'd ever be comfortable on a tranny.... a motor maybe)

 

im going to replace it with a junkyard tranny... its more price effective than trying to replace the actual part that is broken. the actual output shaft of the tranny snapped.
the w58 supra tranny is stronger than the truck, it has a bit steeper gear gears (lower numerically) but it isnt going to matter that much. form everything i have heard on the other sites its a basically bolt in swap other than i will neeed t odo some sheet metal trimming for the shifter..... and i am going to need to swap the bellhousing over to the 22r truck bellhousing of my w56..

 

I'm not sure - could be. The Supra from 1978 had the straight 6 too, but I do know those early Celicas (86 and prior with with 20Rs,22Rs and 22REs) had the same engine and 5speed as the trucks. They might have still used the same trans since they only made about 20 more horsies. Dunno about the Lotus era Celicas and Supras (1982-86)

INcidiently, these Aisin transmissions are really pretty good, and they are used in a lot of vehicles that would surprise you. Most of us know the AX15 in Jeeps is the same as the R150F, but the new Pontiac Solstice for example, also has essentially a R150F in it. Neat.

 

I didn't know that info about the jeeps until I stumbled on it doing a search for Aisin on ebay and a jeep tranny popped up. It is pretty neat to know that.

Flamed, I asked in the thread about cv boots where you said on the 86-95s you don't have to mess with 54mm nut when replacing the halfshafts. Is that only for lockouts or does it apply to ADD as well? Thx.

The older supras/celicas in the 80's were RWD.

 

5 speed non turbo supras had a W58 in them. for the most part, it's as easy as swapping the bellhousing to a W/G series truck bellhousing and using a truck clutch. might have to change the shifter hole, not sure about the driveline. being a W tranny i'd assume it's the same length as what came out of your pickup.

 

Manual hubs, auto hubs, or ADD flanges, all the same. A certain proficiency with profanity helps. Simple:
