I am going to buy some 17x9's and was wondering if I am going to run into any trouble running a 285/70/17 tire on 17x9 wheel?
I know it might be a little wide for the tire but will it affect the tire life or ride of the vehicle? Will it be unsafe? I dont think i can go to the 305/70/17 be cause it is close to 34" tall and only 3/4" wider. Im not sure it would fit on my tacoma with 4.5" lift. Any help/info is appreciated!

I thought the only difference in the 285 and 305 was the width. At least from the Goodyear site they have the same height and same rotating revs....Perhaps the tires you are looking at are sized different. Either will work though

 

I just did the metric tire conversion deal on the internet. I think the 285 was like 32.8x11.2 and the 305 was 33.8x12 or something like that.

 

actually most 285/75/16's and 305/70/16's are the same height under 33" and the difference is the width... The 295/75/16's pass the 33" height and in between the 285's and 305's as far as width, more closer to the 285's... But this is for 16's and you have 17's... should be the same concept though...

Do you have a tire in mind? Just go to their site and check the specs... Tirerack gives specs as well. There is also the recommended rim width listed on the specs as well for different sizes.

 

yeh i agree the concept should be the same but according to the coverter the 305's are a full inch taller.

 

For those tires to be the same diameter, the aspect ratio would need to be different.

Awl crap... I just noticed you were referring to 285/70/17's and not 285/75/17's.... In that case, you are correct in that there will be an inch difference in diameter with a 305/70/17.

Using Goodyear MTR's for example, the 285/70/17 are 32.9"x11.5" and the 305/70/17's being 34"x12.2".

The 285/70/17's MTR's have a maximum rim width mount of 9" so you should be ok with the 17x9 wheels...
