Putting a decent stereo in '93 regular cab truck?

Last year, I put a budget minded stereo in the truck, but it's unsufficient, and the head unit refuses to play discs in the cold weather. The head is not my concern right now, but rather the speaker setup. Have any of you guys with regular cabs been successful in getting decent sound in your truck? I replaced the 3.5's in the dash, and put a longish, narrow box behind the seats with two 6 inch full range speakers - no amp, no subwoofer. I'd like to change that, but where would I put the mid-rangers if I stuffed a sub back there? Since a brilliant idea has yet to materialize, I put the question to the good people here. Thanks!

Yea, You really need to put some 6.5s in the doors. If you really want a sweet setup, I would go with a componant kit in the doors (the tweeters are separate from the mids) , and 2 10s or 2 8s in a custom box behind the seat. You could throw the amp under the seat. A singel 10 actually does quite well in a singe cab. Check out the second page of my homepage for pics and more info.

Yeah, the speakers in the doors thing is probably going to be your best first step, then see if you still need more bass after you have that done. A decent set of Component 6.5" (Infiniti, Polk, Alpine, whatever)will probably give you pretty decent sound, especially if you want to spend some time in the doors and maybe do some sound deadening materials in there as well. I have some cheapie 6.5" in my doors right now, and it gets me by, but I'll be upgrading sometime in the future and adding some sound insulation to quiet the road noise a bit as well as provide a more solid enclosure for the speakers.
